Steering Up Down Adjust

Post by Ooonst » Sat Apr 05, 2025 8:34 pm

Hi Guys!!

I have just purchased one of these and there are mulitude of things that I need to sort out on it but, overall, quite happy. Just road tripped it, 8 hours solid driving and it didn't miss a beat :jump_clap: Surprising as there is an oil leak and the engine bay looks pretty tired!

Anyway, top of my list is a question about the steering adjustment. There is a button on the left side of the steering column and it seems to work to adjust the steering in and out but not up and down. I had just watched a YouTube video a couple of weeks ago where the guy made a passing comment on the same problem - https://youtu.be/fKjs49cISGk?si=GnJwzeDOnlPQgHDd&t=405 (06:45)

Is this a well known issue and... is it an easy fix?

I should also note that the steering wheel has been replaced at some point with what looks like an A6 wheel. Original replacement wheels are bloody expensive https://www.ebay.com/itm/125242997014 !! and I'd still need to get an Airbag as well. I can't see how this would cause this up/down adjustment problem because that is on the column not the wheel. Most things on the replacement wheel seem to work (even the heating) but I have to admit I can't work out how to cycle through the Trip Computer to view average speed, average MPG, current speed etc... Maybe my replacement wheel is missing some buttons or something?

How are we all doing today?! :kissmyrings:

Steering column adjustment - especially the automatic retraction and repositioning - can be corrupted by low battery voltage and sometimes needs a a reset with VCDS to get it working properly again.

Hi there,

On the wiper stalk there are two buttons which control the displays (trip etc) that you're after. The large flat button on the bottom switches between different screens (lap timer, navigation, car info etc) and the small two "nipple" switch on the end controls what each screen can do i.e. start/stop the stopwatch on the Lap Timer, change nav data, cycle through MPG/speed etc on car info etc).

Here's a YouTube video showing it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqYWf1r9-xk

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the responses guys!! Yeah I feel pretty stupid now as I also have a B6 Passat which has exactly the same system and I worked that one out yesterday. Pretty cool that there is a boost pressure reading. So I'm taking it in to the Auto electrician tomorrow to look at the plethora of electrical issues. Steering wheel adjuster included. Will update once they have worked it out.

Steering wheel up/down was pretty much just a scan and reset I think. Nothing fancy was done by the auto electrician to resolve this but he did note "burnt connection in motor plug" so whilst he was in there he cleaned and tensioned the connector pins.
