Uprated GB for 1000bhp

Post by RMC83 » Sun Apr 02, 2023 1:16 am

Hi All,

Just wondering, to get an uprated GB for handling 1000hp, what's required?

Is is best to source a 2nd GB & just send it somewhere for upgrading? If so, who is best to do this work, someone in UK or elsewhere? I know there are a couple of 1000hp cars around now, so hopefully the path of what's required to get the GB uprated is a bit clearer now than a few years ago. I'm already at 900hp, with TTE1000 turbo's and wagner IC, but still on stock GB, so uprated GB and WMI is next on the list for me to get to the 1000hp mark safely.

I'm based in Malaysia, so just wondering what the cheapest way is to go about getting an uprated GB?

Cheers
Roy

Being in Malaysia makes things a lot more difficult as most Audi/VAG modders are in Europe so shipping for you would be a pain in time/money.

Generally it's rarely the power the kills the gearbox I find, it tends to either having over 1200nm torque or constantly using the kickdown with 1100nm+ which is causing the input shaft to snap (happened to 3 uprated Gearboxes I know of so far including my own).

The only two options I'm aware of at I know people have used so far (including myself) is either via RSPerformance in the UK (Ricky Elder - lots of great feedback on here) or TEO motorsports in Germany who did the very first one I'm aware of, however they seem to be very quiet now so I don't know if they are even still in business.

I used RSPerformance both times (OEM to Uprated and then a repair when I snapped the input shaft) and usually takes about 2 weeks of work and costs about 15500RM (approx £2750) not including shipping. However the last time I had my GB uprated was 2+ years ago so prices may have changed.

I'd seen another company offering a 1400hp/1500nm+ CNC'd gearbox for £10000 (55000RM) but I don't know of anybody who has actually had one made so far.

here is a list of those who say they uprate our gearboxes but remember most of us on this forum have only used Ricky.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info. Yes, being out here adds that layer of time & cost for doing anything. I got the turbo's, IC, downpipes and brakes done during covid, as i couldn't drive anyway, so it did not really matter that the car was sitting in the garage for 6months waiting on the parts etc, but yes..for the GB, its a different story, so if i do decide on the uprated GB, i'm sure its not going to be cheap during to the logistics of it all.

Anyway, thanks for the links. Will have a good look through it all to see if it would be worthwhile.

Cheers
Roy

Hi Roy,

Ricky at RE Performance did my 1000bhp the other year, I went down a similar route collection parts, we used Teo to build the box to 1300nm (Nizpro input and intermediate shafts) and has been good so far.

Bottom line is I have a spare OEM gearbox sat in Ricky's workshop still, its going to need new solenoids as part of the refurb process and had 155k miles on it when it was pulled, its there waiting for a new home if its of any use to you?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the info there. For sure, i'll keep that in mind as this was one aspect i wasn't sure on, ie sourcing a 2nd GB for upgrading.

What was the reason for going with Teo for the GB upgrade & not RE Performance direct also for the upgrade?

Cheers
Roy

Hi Roy,

Apologies for the delay in replying!

From memory, Ricky's gearbox parts supplier in Europe packed up Shop, as a result he got rid of his ZF tooling as no expectation of doing boxes himself so Ricky suggested going direct to Teo.

I basically shipped the 2nd hand gearbox to Teo, asked him to make it take 1300nm torque and left him to it. I think I have Nizpro billet input and intermediate shafts which were cnc welded/strengthened in house by Teo, fresh/uprated frictions & steels etc. and a new torque converter. Basically he just needs a good gearbox carcass as the majority of the internals get binned/replaced.

So far so good, use the car almost every day and it behaves itself.

I still have my original box down at Ricky's if you wanted one? It needs a solenoid pack putting on it but otherwise should be fine for a conversion

Cheers,
Rich
