Best place to buy replacement propshaft
Best place to buy replacement propshaft
Hi All,
The bushing in my long propshaft has disintegrated, so the shaft is currently with a machine Shop to see if they can split it to allow the replacement bearing/carrier to be fitted, but its proving quite a challenge.
Just wondering, where would the best place, price wise to buy a complate replacement shaft? Has anyone replaced one recently who would know the price these days? I know its going to be expensive, so thought id better start checking now incase the machine Shop cant split the original one. Thanks.
Cheers
Roy

Audi charge about £1300-IIRC for the entire prop-shaft and I don't know of anywhere else that sells a complete replacement (maybe eBay for 2nd hand one).
However, you can buy just the centre bearing on it's own for the Shop to replace from eBay or a Google search etc, just use the prop-shaft Pt No - 4F0521101H - to search, but be aware that Audi call it a "Cardan-Shaft" as well as a prop-shaft.

Re: Best place to buy replacement propshaft
is it the bearing that has failed or just the rubber
Re: Best place to buy replacement propshaft
Based on others (and myself) it'll be the rubber that splits and/or falls apart as I've not seen the actual bearing fail yet.

Re: Best place to buy replacement propshaft
Yeh, its the rubber that's shot, but the problem is now that i think the bearing piece is moulded into the shaft, so it's this that's causing the issue just now. I have the replacement bushing, but the machine Shop is still struggling with trying the split the shaft.
Hi Ian...thanks for the info. The audi specialist where my car is (not audi centre), but their supplier has quoted just over £3k for a replacement propshaft. Now, I am in Malaysia, so price includes delivery aswell....but the price still seems extreme to me. Which, if your £1300 is correct...would seems like the price quoted by my guy is way too high.
Any contact for the best audi parts dept that you have?
Cheers

At the recommendation of another member on here a few years back I ordered a full replacement shaft from Bailey Morris, for sub £700 iircRMC83 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 2:43 pmYeh, its the rubber that's shot, but the problem is now that i think the bearing piece is moulded into the shaft, so it's this that's causing the issue just now. My rubber has gone as well,
I'm fitting an aftermarket support that clamps around the shaft, would this solve your problem?

Hello...thanks for the info. I called them today. They've had a couple on backorder since last year, so they are following up with their supplier now to check on delivery.Stiggles wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 1:56 amAt the recommendation of another member on here a few years back I ordered a full replacement shaft from Bailey Morris, for sub £700 iircRMC83 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 2:43 pmYeh, its the rubber that's shot, but the problem is now that i think the bearing piece is moulded into the shaft, so it's this that's causing the issue just now. Can i ask though...is the part actual audi oem part or different manufacturer? Just to check to part strength etc. I'm running 900hp, so just want to make sure this replacement part will be okay. Have you had any issues with yours or heard of any issues if using them?
Thanks

Re: Best place to buy replacement propshaft
Hello...yeh...i've got a replacement bushing & housing aswell, but the problem is that the original bearing is moulded into the shaft, which the machine Shop is struggling to release. As i understand, to use the repplacement bushing & housing...the original shaft needs to be split.Phuketpaul wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 7:05 amMy rubber has gone as well,

Have you installed this successfully yet, or still to be done? I'd be interested to hear how you managed to split the shift so that the bushing can be replaced.

Re: Best place to buy replacement propshaft
hi mate get the upgraded center bearing. if you google it u will find it, i did mine, i lowered the rear of the exhaust on to the floor and removed the heat sheild to show the center bearing. cut a hole in the bracket with an angle grinder, cut the rubber around the bearing. pulled the bracket and rubber off, trimmed the rubber around the bearing and fitted the new upgraded one as it comes in to halfs and bolts together. took me about an hour over a pit a work. becarefull about getting a near center bearing from a surpler, as far as ive been told you need to cut off the top of bracket off and reweld it back on the other way round.
hope that helps

If I remember they supply OEMs and such so the quality is there, they also work with heavy machinery, with torque in the several thousands
The shaft I replaced was identical to the OEM one on the car. I think I've covered 25k hard miles since, mostly with 700hp
I'm now running 990 and it's not shown any indication of giving, my biggest weak points will be the rear diff and the half shafts.
No point paying twice the price for an Audi stamp when an equal component is on the market IMO. I believe it's their own brand but I can't actually remember what it said on there.
