Weird noise @ specific rpm
Weird noise @ specific rpm
Here is a weird one for you.
Between 2000 and 2500rpm, in mainly 3d and 4th gear, sometimes 5th although I think its not gear related, at gentle part throttle but a bit more than driving like a taxi driver, I get a fairly noticeable noise coming from around the front of the car, which at first instance resembles a wheel bearing of some sort. It does follow the engine acceleration noise, and as it surpasses the 2500rpm margin it stops on its own.
If I accelerate faster there is no noise. If I drive casually there is no noise. If I floor it there is no noise. It us not related with a cold or warm engine, although I do tend to be able to reproduce it more after a normal engine temperature. It's not there after long drives or heavy accelerations.
I had the right side wheel bearing replaced but made no difference. Car runs and drives without issues or fault codes.
I'm at a point that I can't even get the mechanic to hear it as it doesn't do it all the time.
I'm thinking more of the front belt tensioner for the alternator at this point which I'm not too keen to have everything ripped apart just for that. My 2nd thought could be the center driveshaft bearing although the noise seems to be more prominent from the front of the engine.
Although the car has very low mileage I suspect the previous owner didn't drive it very much and as I do, perhaps humidity may have caused bearing issues to appear.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

hi mate, normaly if this the proshaft center bearing you get a vibration like a wheel out of balance, you can easliy see by getting under the car and having a look at it. mine had sagged to the bottom of the carrier and had a lot of lift up and down, the rubber had no splits had just sagged under the weight od the propshaft.

Thanks. Did it make any noise and if so did it sound anything like I describe?Charmie86 wrote:hi mate, normaly if this the proshaft center bearing you get a vibration like a wheel out of balance, you can easliy see by getting under the car and having a look at it. mine had sagged to the bottom of the carrier and had a lot of lift up and down, the rubber had no splits had just sagged under the weight od the propshaft.

Hi. It’s hard to say if there was a noise. I was looking for a knocking noise at the time which turned out to be low drc pressure. I have had it on other cars when the prop Center bearing started to make a wheel bearing type noise. I changed my bearing carrier with the unprated one but you leave the bearing on the prop. U will be able to tell if the rubber has gone weak on the Center bearing when you push on the prop. The bearing carrier is placed about where the arm rest is in the Center console. Hope that helps

It does. I will have a look around. I already have bought the uprated carrier to fit anywayCharmie86 wrote:Hi. It’s hard to say if there was a noise. Hi. You will be able to tell if it’s the carrier. The only problem with the updated carrier is that u use the original bearing on the prop and cut off the old hanger. If it is the bearing that has gone I would take it to a prop shaft specialist to replace the bearing. I’ve hear of people scrapping the whole prop due to trying it at home. If it’s just the carrier I managed to do buy lowering the exhaust taking the heat shield off. Cut the old bracket/hanger off and fit the updated 2 piece hanger with the prop on the car

Can't you use the uprated one and fit an aftermarket bearing for it?Charmie86 wrote:Hi. You will be able to tell if it’s the carrier. Re: Weird noise @ specific rpm
Yea u can but I would recommend taking it to a propshaft specialist to remove the bearing if that is at fault. If you already have the uprated hanger I would fit that and leave the bearing on the propshaft and see if it sorts out the noise. If I doesn’t then take off the prop. To fit the uprated hanger you have to angle front off the old carrier and cut around the bearing for the new hanger to clamp around. Watch the vids that are provided with the new hanger
