Oil specification

Post by Caino6 » Sat Apr 17, 2021 4:11 pm

Hello all, just wondering if this engine takes 5/30 VW504/507?

Just checking levels this morning and oil needs a little top up, I have some Castrol edge pro 5/30 VW504/507 left over from my B6 S4 just not sure if it’s the correct spec or not?

Cheers

Lovely stuff, thank you very much, I have only had it just over a month so still getting used to everything as I’m very new to these, the service isn’t due until July, I will carry it out myself, I hear they have an interesting drain bung set up consisting of up to 5 drain bungs depending on the year of it?? Haha

Yes, and even when you use all those drains you still leave quite a lot of oil behind.

Yes seems like a pain, don’t see many production cars which have a dry sump! I was thinking when I do an oil change, drain out what I can, suck the rest out through the reservoir at the top, measure it and put it the same amount of fresh oil

Would anyone have a recommendation on what brand of spark plugs to use? Plus coils, are they the normal red Bosch ones that Audi like to use? If so has anyone got the oem part number to hand? Cheers

I go around the drain plugs one at a time (mine had 4), suck out the reservoir then go around the drain plugs again, it's surprising how much I get out of the plugs second time around. Even though I thought I had a near empty system, when I took the oil pump off I got covered in a considerable quantity of oil.

Turns out mine has 4 bungs too according to TPS. I haven’t had a chance to have a look yet. I take it the 4 drain bungs are easily identified?

Once you know where they are. One in the bottom of the thermostat block on the bottom of the engine often with a hex head with a large 12 point triple-square socket care required if it is as it's alloy in an alloy casting and tightens to only 25Nm. The others have round heads with a slightly smaller 12 point socket, tighten to 40Nm and are in the oil pipes - one close to the left of the oil cooler, one close to the right of the oil cooler and the last in the oil pipe between the tanks and the front of the oil pump, quite close to the right end of the oil cooler.
If working with the car on stands the plugs in the cooler lines are quite well hidden by the inner lip of the front bumper.

Thanks I’m sure I’ll figure it out once I’m under there. I just like to have a general sort of idea before hand.

Just one last thing the oil I have at home is 504/507 LL03 or longlife III as it says on bottle. Everywhere I have looked says I need 504/507 LL. is there any difference does anyone know? I have made some enquires to Castrol customer support but seems to have fallen on deaf ears lol

What I want to know is the Longlife III ok to use? If not I’ll get some LL

Edit I tell a lie castrol did reply, I just missed it, they say LL or longlife III is recommended as long as it’s VW 504.00/507.00. So looks like I’m good to go

Am I right in saying the service indicator can only be reset with diagnostic tool also? I have access to a snap on modus. Will that do it?

Yes, you'll need some sort of tool more advanced than a basic code reader. According to the specs, the Snapon Modis can perform service interval resets, so I'd try it.
