Service interval / maintenance schedule?

Post by jbourne » Fri Apr 03, 2020 11:03 am

So thanks to the excellent thread by Ian, we know how to replace the major consumables. But at what intervals? I'm referring to specifically:

* fuel filter
* engine air filter
* pollen filter
* gearbox oil
* engine oil [each 15K kms / 10k miles?]
* spark plugs [40k kms / 30k miles?]

I'm curious about the suggested mileage, but also if there's a year limit too (for cars that are not driven a lot per year).

IIRC Audi had two systems. One was a really weird system of variable time "per condition" rather than a set mileage/time for the servicing, so effectively you would bring it in for an inspection and the conditions post inspection would tell them when to service it - Not a fan of that myself.

The alternative (and more traditional) version was a fixed term split into two groups which were then alternated - Minor and Major - and these were 10k/12 months apart so 10k = minor, 20k = major, 30k = minor, 40k = major etc.

Mileage wise - the engine oil was replaced every servicing, fuel filter at a major, air filter was cleaned every servicing and only replaced on condition/request, pollen filter was on a major, gearbox oil was "never" done as Audi falsely said GB is sealed for life (ZF said every 60k miles IIRC and a ZF/RS6 specialist can do it), plugs were 60k miles too.

Time wise - I'd swap the oil every year even if it's done very low miles as it'll still get condensation effecting it etc but for the rest, unless the car is static for a year then they should be fine. If it is static then things the fuel filter would need looking at.

Thats not exhaustive and you'd be better off getting 100% correct info from a specialist rather than my creaky old memory but those sort of figures above should give you a starting point.

Cool thanks! This helps a lot. I guess I’ll check my air filter next and then hopefully settle into some ownership enjoyment now that almost everything is done. :D
