Decoke Required?

Post by cammmy » Fri Dec 27, 2019 2:53 pm

Hi All

Having done a bunch of reading on the v10 in the S6 needing periodic manifold removal/decoke in the ports; does the RS6 need the same thing? Ours is the only version with a dry sump correct? I imagine this would necessitate a change in the PCV system but I don't know what Audi did and there doesn't seem to be much info out there on decoking the RS6, only the S6.

Thanks

Not entirely true buddy, MRC pulled the manifold off mine to relocate a misaligned turbulence flap and the ports were covered in carbon

Now they weren't nearly as bad as any of the NA engines, but there was a build up, I imagine given the nature of the engine it'll not be a noticeable difference if done but it's not something to be completely ruled out

I'll be having my heads cleaned up when I have the engine dropped for turbo upgrades for peace of mind

When I was chasing my smoking problem I put a camera into some of the cylinders on my car. The tops of the pistons weren't as clean as I'd like to see them at 114k. How much of that was from the oil it was sucking in from the intercooler hoses I can't say.

I posted a bunch of pictures of my Before/After Carbon Clean done my MRC on my approx 96k mile engine - while there was a small amount of carbon it didn't really doing and made zero difference to performance but, while the engine was out, it was a "peace of mind" thing, but thats just a sample of one!

Cool, thanks for the replies. Seems like it's more of a thing to do if you notice problems or have the engine apart for another reason?

How often do the flaps go wrong and can they grenade the engine? I have 88k miles on mine. Is it something that should be inspected? I've owned the car about a month. I haven't noticed any problems but I'm a big believer in preventative maintenance, especially on something like this.

RS6 flaps very rarely go wrong - S6 flaps go wrong more often but still fairly rare - RS4 flaps are very failure prone. I don't know if it's the extra carbon build-up on the S6/RS4 which makes a difference or if it's different material specs etc but the RS6 flaps are pretty strong.
