New owner - what to do first?

Post by jbourne » Thu Aug 22, 2019 10:55 pm

So I took the plunge on an C6 RS6. Always wanted one, and not sure whether it was a great idea, but I guess I'll find out in the next few years :)

What should I do to it first? Not talking about mods - for now - but more like, immediate maintenance needs. Leaving aside what the previous owner told me, I'd like to know what I should look at (I saw a thread about oil at the back of the engine somewhere?..., coolant pipe corrosion? - but the car is in the Far East, not too much rain, no snow or salt so maybe not a critical issue), etc. I suppose I will take it to an indy Shop for a ppi (yeah, I know I should do this before buying, but you know. things don't always play out how we want, hehe.)

Also, what fluids should I immediately change? The car has 55,000 kms.

Thanks for any advice!

First of all congrats.

I would just simply enjoy it for now and assuming it has some or full history there is not much to worry about.

Once you get bored, scan it through and then you'll know where you stand and what you'd like to address, plan for etc etc.

Great motor and something that we are all somewhat privileged to have chance to own piece of motoring history!

have fun...

With it being in the warmer parts of the world and only having cover 30k miles, I very much doubt (unless its never been serviced throughout its life) that it wants for much! As said above, just enjoy it! Coolant pipe corrosion shouldn't be an issue to you, the oil pump seal may be due to the heat, but if its not leaking from the left side of the lower part of the engine then worry about it at a later date. Your vac hoses may be brittle but again its not done the miles/heat cycles.

If its not been serviced in a while then give it the works if you have the spare cash,
  • engine oil (where you are I wouldn't use the Audi 5w30! use 40 at least, maybe even 50w) and filter
  • fuel filter
  • cabin filter (that's probably mostly blocked)
  • air filter (upgrade these to BMC ones)
  • gear box oil and filter
  • brake fluid
  • check the pads and discs, at that mileage it should at least be on its 2nd pair of discs, and they should have loads of meat on them, if originals then they're probably in need of changing. Check rear springs aren't snapped (common)
  • Suspension bushes check - at least see if you can remove the upper pinch bolt for the upper arms. If you can then lucky you, remove it grease the bolt shaft up and refit so it doesn't seize one day!
But it sounds like you've bought a low mileage car! Where is it/are you from. Oh and you need to post some pictures now too! :-)
