Intermittent ABS/ESP fault

Post by simmo » Sun Sep 17, 2017 5:57 pm

Has anyone had any problems with an intermittent ESP/ABS fault?

VCDS has reported a front right sensor fault - so I've replaced the ABS sensor (with Bosch part number 0 265 007 928). The original sensor tested open circuit on a resistance test. Problem then seemed to be rectified, but then it came back a day or two later at random times. If the car is stood for a few days it can be fine, then reappear after 40 miles of driving. At other times it can reappear after 1/2 mile of driving

I think it could be a wiring loom fault (suspect the cable from the sensor plug into the ABS/ECU) possibly earthing or rubbing through somewhere. I'm also suspicious it could be a front bearing (wear) fault, thats throwing the sensor ring slightly out of alignment with the sensor - noticed the car is now clicking badly in carparks etc.

Has anyone had any issues like this - before I start to tear the car apart. (Before anyone asks local Audi franchise dealer was useless - they had the car three days, and had yet to test the wiring properly, so I took it back off them).

It might be worth checking that the pins on the plug are not loose or corroded and that the pins look securely crimped onto the ends of the wires.

I'll whip the wheel off again and have another look at the connection near the wheel. Will also trace the loom back to the ESP/ABS box and put a test bulb/probe across it it to check if it can carry some current.

Had a look on the Bosch service repair website and looks like they can service/exchange the ABS/ESP 8.0 ECU for around the £300 mark...should it be that. The intermittent nature leads me to think its wiring or mechanical.
