Replacing tyres advice

Post by Nosillad » Tue Mar 21, 2017 1:11 pm

 Just ripped a hole in the side wall of the tyre taking the car out of the garage.

Luckily no other damage which seems strange given the hole in the tyre but i guess on the positive side no body work repair.

So now need another MPSS, whats the general thoughts on replacement, current fronts have about 5mm left. Would you replace the one or both on the same axel?

Not convinced with the usual audi advice of all 4 at the same time, but is there any stock in diff winding if you just replace the 1?

I replace in axle sets as long as the car has proper diffs, not viscous couplings. I wouldn't be concerned about the difference between new and 5mm on different axles but I wouldn't do it across the car.

Personally 8mm vs 5mm I'd be OK to run those on same axle in your situation

I used to have a GT-R and the official guidance on that was tread difference had to be sub 4mm across an axle

A few mm on the same axle any less than 4mm replace all 4 , it can cause havoc with diffs if the rolling radius is larger front to rear . Some places like cost co this is the policy they have

Thanks guys, replaced the two and then rotated them to the back. Checking the rears whilst off they are nearer to 6mm so happy with them on the fronts and new rubber on the back.

Took the car for a quick spin to make sure everything was good and the service in 30days light came on, it's just not my month :)
