Rear window heating

Post by Farravi » Wed Nov 09, 2016 2:35 pm

Gents I've been driving in the wonderful British weather and my window has been hazing / frosting up. Not showing up as a fault on Vagcom either. Any idea how to fault find?

Don't know if if will work on more modern heated windows, but you could get a voltmeter and just test that you haven't got a break in the circuit somewhere. Also fuse could have gone - so check that - but might be linked to a few things.

So the heated rear window button does nothing?

If thats the case it'll likely be broken contacts on the rear screen itself.... you can remove all the plastic boot trim to reveal the heating element and check for broken wire/tracks.

Do a voltage check on the main connection point too... its a very simple system, you push a button a relay operates and it electrically warms the screen till a temperature is reached

And as above check fuses etc.

Oh and FYI this job is an absolute dick! Good luck, personally I'd take it to a garage after having to do it once already.

Rear window heating

Post by stevo55 » Fri Nov 11, 2016 4:44 pm

As an aside does everyone else's rear window take an age to heat up and clear frost/condensation? In mine it's around 10 minutes plus which is ridiculous. I flagged it to Audi and they said that was normal and nothing was wrong with it. In every BMW I had it was very quick-not so in my RS!

No, mines quicker than that. Starts clearing almost straight away and the frost we've had this week has been gone within 5 minutes.

I believe that the relay for the HRW is one of those on the board inside the right side of the boot.
