Suspect engine noise

Post by rs6_sid » Wed Sep 07, 2016 9:06 pm

Hi guys I was out in My car before and I noticed on idle that it make a slight slow pulsating wuring noise at idle. give it a tiny amount of revs even 50rpm more and it stops , anyone had any issues I'm guessing possible belt/pully /bearing anything I should look for ?

Best thing to do is post a video of the noise....

Where is the noise coming from is it louder on say the left bank vs the right bank or more centred? if it was a pulley i'd have thought the noise would have just increased as you increased the rev's
Usually the aux belts and tensioners are good for pretty high millage (no service interval)

My powersteering pump makes a little bit of noise at idle due to the previous owner running the pump dry without realising, i actually topped it up with nearly 1litre of fluid.....
Its obviously almost silent now but it does still make a faint noise which is obviously wear on the pump due to it being ran with low fluid, hasnt got any louder in the year that ive had the car mind as i was going to replace if it ever gets louder or if my engine has to come out whichever comes first.
Could it be something similar?

That's a larl clip I took before, it probably sounds louder than it is.. but you can't hear it with windows, but I did shove my phone as close as I could , and it's less noticeable with the bonnet open as can hear the fuel pumps over it

Sounds exactly like mine... Power steering i'd say, change the fluid and try topping it up for now as i bet its low... just because the resivoir looks full pour some in anyway and it'll more than likely take it.
Mine was whining so bad when i went to buy it, i knocked money off for a pump and engine drop to fit.. i drove round the corner bought some Hydro fluid and topped it up with 1 litre.
Pump was 10x quieter, still a bit noisy.. i changed the fluid for fresh and its as quiet as its ever going to be, little bit less than yours.

Quick one for you Tom , when you open the power steering res , is your level Upto the gauze on the side ?

I have put 150ml in and it's all most stoped most the time bar when it's nose is in pointing up hill , is max fill when. It's screwed down or just dipped in ? I feel it needs a touch more but I don't want to over fill it and pop the seals on the rack !

Mine looked full on the gauze but it wasnt everytime i poured some in, it bubbled away and took the fluid, hence how i ended up adding nearly a litre, looked fine on the level check but wasnt actually anywhere near enough in the system.
Mine also stopped making the noise really quietened down anyway when i added the fluid.

Whip the front bumper off and change the fluid for fresh!

Its around 2 Litres as long as its Hydrualic fluid and now generic Power steering fluid or ATF then you'll be fine.

Draining is easy, the line runs to the P/S cooler on the front radiator assembly... you wont miss it, just trace the line down when you have the bumper off, just undo the jubilee (or one time use clamp) and drain the line, suck the remains out of the P/S resivoior and do a few lock to lock (with engine off and pipe disconnected) to push as much out the rack as you can.

Then fill it up, do a few lock to lock turns, top it up some more.. then start the car and be ready to add about a litre.
