Oil top up for you guys?

Post by discostu49 » Sat Jul 09, 2016 9:01 pm

So I'm not very savy in the engine area of the rs6 done some searching on here and feel confident I have no issue but they were old threads so here is the question.

Just been on an awesome hooning, spiritual spirited hard 350 mile drive with some members of here and on the way home the yellow check oil light came on. So checked it out when I got home ( let it run then turned it off for 3 mins ) oil is sitting under the line saying fill so maybe used a litre since last oil service which was 4 weeks ago, and about 2k has been done since the service is this normal to use a bit more oil when hoonING and normal to top up ever 2k? I checked the manual and it says depending on driving conditions on which the car is used oil consumption can be 0.5ltr /1000km which is 1ltr per 1200 miles. Do you guys top up much ??

I'm about the same at 1ltr every 1500-2000 miles depending on how I drive. From what I gather its to do with the initial bed in procedure the first owners carried out and how well they stuck to the official Audi procedure (although I'm not sure why) as some cars use no oil and others use 1ltr every 1k miles without issue.

Fantastic Ian so nothing to worry about ?I will just stick a little bottle in the boot ? And keep an eye on it? Also it's on longlife3 but I use the car daily small trips then a Italian tune up and long drives at the weekends... was thinking going normal oil instead of longlife? ?

My car never used oil between services until the start of this year no matter how I drove it. Then out of the blue the check oil level warning came on. Sure enough it needed oil, over the course of a few months it took 2.5 litres of oil.
I left it into the local Audi garage for a service and asked them to check out the oil usage.
They said it was normal and within limits.
Anyway as per my other post they broke my gearbox :audibash: . Long story short I pulled the engine and gearbox, during the process I found my oil usage. The turbo on the offside was leaking. When I pulled the boost hose on the near side there was approximately 20ml of oil, the offside was different there was approximately 3/4 of a litre of oil in it.
Audi had not even pulled the hoses to check for oil.
Might not be a bad idea to pull the lower hoses and see if one side has more oil then the other.

Thanks for that will keep it in mind. I put a litre in today and it's sitting perfect went on a 70 mile drive checked it and no movement. Another member mentioned it's normal for the car to burn more oil when using the higher end of the Rev range which I sure have been in the 2k miles I've done in 4 weeks of having it. Manual says half a litre ever 621miles .. I will keep an eye on it. Im sure at the moment it can't be the seals as they were all done when the coolant pipes were getting done so putting this down to my driving technique :blackrs4:

I think it's more important when there is a "rate of change" difference, so if it was using very little and then suddenly starts using lots then it's something to look at but if the rate stays the same, like mine, then it's less of an issue.

Oil level sensor is known to fail and will give warnings when the oil level is fine...

100% agree. I could not believe it when the garage said no issue even when I told them it never used oil.
What really pissed me off was they said the pulled the bottom hoses to check them it was quite obvious they hadn't by the amount of oil and road grime on the hose clamps.

Its why i wont use Audi for anything...

Mine uses little to none no matter how i driver her, when i put the boost pipes on from Forge there was maybe 100ml in the drivers side and about 20ml in the passagner side.
Nothing to worry about i think, the design of the drivers side pipe warrants more oil to collect in there anyway.

3/4 litre is very bad though..

It'll be off to get the oil pump seal done soon as i have the cash and then she'll be back to good health!
