michelin pilot super sport tyres -any feedback

Post by perthwaRS6 » Thu Aug 16, 2012 7:37 pm

Hi fellow C6 RS6 tragics, :bigwave:

I am considering fitting Michelin pilot super sports 275/35ZR20, Z speed rated, to the C6 RS6 replacing the current Dunlop Sport Maxx GT 275/35 R20 Y (102 XL) RO1.

Can anyone please advise if the load rating of the Michelin PSS is ok for the C6 RS6.

Also, if anyone has fitted the MIchelin pilot super sports to their C6 RS6, what is their experience?

Any advice appreciated.
regards,
john

What is the load rating of the tyre above?

I've had OEM Dunlops since new and wouldn't change.

I have had MPSS on my C6 RS6 Avant since last Oct. Naturally the tyres I have fitted are the correct load and speed rating. Outstanding dry road performance, better wet weather performance than OEM tyre and even better wear than OEM Pirelli or Dunlops. They are slightly bigger than OEM tyres. Stick out more and have broader "shoulders" - I think this is to do with the better flatter contact profile/construction of MPSS. Tyre fitter was worried they wouldn't fit to start with so it's visually obvious and they give a more pronounced stance than OEM. Only criticism I have on RS6 fitment is they are slightly noisier ( but oddly not on my GT3. Another benefit is they are more supple and compliant, giving a smoother ride in Dynamic mode.

Tyre technology changes and these tyres are a major step-change in performance and wear, so a no-brainier in putting MPSS on RS6 - great tyre!

On my GT3 I have had a second set waiting to go on but still don't need to change them despite the abuse they've had.

They are nearly as sticky as Cups and have way better wear performance than old PS2s.

To put this into perspective - and you will struggle to believe this because I still can't - I have done 2xdays at Dijon-Prenois Circuit last August, 2xdays at Goodwood, 1xday at Spa (also very hot) and 2xdays at Le Mans-Bugatti (very hot) and they still have 3-4mm across all tyres. Sure, they have had numerous heat cycles but they stick, don't wear and here's the most important bit...in UK where it rains a lot, there is no way I would have cups on the GT3 (as intended) as any standing water makes the car dangerous on most roads. So MPSS a compromise as such on GT3, but an absolute winner on the RS6, and shudder to think how many sets of Cups I would have gone through doing the above mentioned tracks days. I don't struggle to keep up with others in similar vehicles with Cups on and I wouldn't say I'm a driving god, but certainly competent.

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of MPSS.

Get them at CostCo on a 20% off deal and you'll be smiling even more.

Hope this helps...

Porkafly is absolutely right in everything he say's MPSS piss over everything wet and dry. The biggest tell is that the Dunlop's break away much earlier in the wet. They say "reinfoced" on the side this means 102Y which is the correct load rating.

I made exactly the same switch and haven't looked back - wet and dry grip are totally transformed.

Hi fellow posters, :bigwave:

many thanks for the feed back. Greatly appreciated. This feedback makes this a great forum for us RS6 tragics.

I am buying a set of four MPSS from tire rack out of USA landed at my door step here in Perth after all taxes at gbp 1200.

Not as cheap as UK, but a lot cheaper than Oz price for four of gbp 2600!

Michelin PSS are fantastic. Great grip. Great handling. Look nice. Wide section widths (relative to their posted widths). Reasonable tread life. Fairly priced. Light as hell (reducing rotational mass is very beneficial for acceleration).

I would say you would be crazy to not give them a try, all else considered.

I've been running them (275 30 19r) on my C5 for a couple of months. They're a square tyre but it shouldn't bother the C6, it has insane amounts of dry grip but it's not as good in the wet (I was coming from GY F1 Asyms 27 30 19r). A no brainer if you lived somewhere dry.
