Tinting dual pane glass?

Post by andy » Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:53 pm

My car has dual pane glass with heat insulation which is a very nice option but from the factory you can't then specify privacy glass and therefore it doesn't look it's best IMO. So I want to get the windows tinted to improve the look but I wonder if there is anything I should be concerned about with the laminated glass?

I've had a quote from Twillight Tint who have been recommended for the West Sussex area, and they are happy to do it but at my risk. Should I be worried by this or are they simply covering themselves?

Any other recommendations for companies near Gatwick/Crawley? I've been advised to stay away from mobile guys as they probably can't keep the glass clean enough to do a top job.

I'm also thinking about having the fronts done but with a very light tint to stay legal but enhance the look further. Any downside to this?

What would you say is a good tint level for the rear doors and back screen? I don't like the blacked out look and probably aiming for close to factory as a level of tint, anyone know what this is? 50%?

You shouldn't have a problem tinting dual pane glass, I have the A8 tinted which has this glass and have had no issues at all! Still looks as good as the day it was put on. Go for it...

Booked in at Twilight Tint for next Saturday, looking forward to the results. Will measure the light through the fronts before we know if I can tint them.

Off to Twilight Tint inthe morning so wanted to ask about degrees of tint. I don't want the blacked out limo look but something more in line with the amount of light the blinds cut out. I'm guessing this is about 50% light but anyone done this before or happen to know the light levels for tint?

Tinting dual pane glass?

You might want to bear in mind that the dual pane glass will come out a slightly different shade as to the fixed panes of glass when tinted.

Ta for that, yes I appreciate that there is a slight tint with the dual pane glass in the first place.

So after a lot of umming and ahhing when at Twilight Tint's place today, I chose the 20% tint i.e. 20% light let through. This seems to work quite well and has a very nice overal effect, very pleased with the result  Haven't done the front glass but did have it measured, 73% light coming through so I'm just over the legal limit of 70% give or take 5%. Talking to the chap at Twilight he said he would be prepared to fit the lightest tint to the front which only cuts out 5% light but it would be on my head if I got stopped for it. Will live with how it is for now and think about that one later.
