"Torque" Question

Post by Streem » Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:16 pm

Hi,

I am new to the forum but not Tuning cars.

I have just bought a C6 RS6 Plus Saloon and fully intend to turn up the wick. I notice that the MTM maps limit the Torque to 785NM and that the MRC maps (and other's) allow the Torque to go up to around 925NM.

So my question is can the gearbox take 925NM for a sustained period of time or is the limited MTM map sensible because they know some thing we don't?

Any experiences / stories and advise welcome.

Thanks

FON.

Rule 1.

The 6HP box in the C6 is said to be good for 1000Nm. I'm sure Nige can confirm this, question is, how can it live with this sort of torque?

Not exactly sure what you mean by FON or Rule 1.

Being good for that amount of Torque is quite amazing considering my 18 tonne Scania is 1250NM standard!

I suppose i will call some tuners who would you chaps reccommend?

Hi,

Converesely to previous poster, I've heard that the gearbox is the weakest link here. When I stepped up from basic MTM tune to what I have now (790PS, 927nm of torque) I mentally prepared myself for gearbox change in the future. Hope I'm gonna be positively surprised, though :-). So far, after 5000km, it works without problems. Happy to hear other people's views

I think the consensus is somewhere between 900-1000 nm risk limit, discussed by tuners and the well researched alike (excludes me).
As to the longevity at these levels, I guess we need to hear from people who have 2+years, 30k+ miles and/or given the GB heavy track style treatment for extended periods, in a 900+nm state of tune. Replicated experience is the most valuable proving ground IMO.

For me personally, the jury is out. I have driven mine harder than my previous C5, and I am yet to be concerned about how the GB locks up. I have also seen tuned C6's driven much harder than my own, with no known issues to date.

Coming from a C5 you really do notice the difference of the standard TC quickly locking before full power resumes on gear change (after the up change burp), which adds a bit of comfort. That said, I would not have gone the tuning route if I was not prepared to wear some expense of something in the drive train being at risk of un-natural stress, the GB obviously being the worst case scenario. Calculated known risk, or no risk at all IMO.

TBI, do share your spec, as your PS figure is a good result.

Hi gents,

That's all very helpful thoughts and experiences shared there thank you very much.

Brings me to another question: Is there a particular gearbox re-builder that is known for rebuilding these GB in the UK and has anyone worked out the weak link yet and designed a particular upgrade / part? probably not by the sounds of it. Whats the general ££££ damage if a C6 GB lets go?

Many thanks for answering questions...

Why bother, is it really worth rebuilding it? Just run the '6 with a warranty and have it replaced by Audi. Boom, another 2 year warranty on yer 'box.
There are some 6HP26A rebuild kits Stateside but what's the point, re-read above.

Hi,

C6NVS - see my specs in rolling road results thread. The car was customized in Poland by Sportmile (custom 3'' non-res exhaust from downpipes and ITG filters).

D_K, which warranty would you go for that would cover with the mods?

Ran mine at 925Nm for 2 1/2 years / 22k miles without issues and I didn't "nurse it" too often!

MTM/Quattro GmBH told me via a third party the drive shafts are rated at 1k Nm... I assume they'd give up before you GB.
