Safe driving

Post by mc3744 » Wed Mar 10, 2010 3:40 pm

I've been discussing with family and friends forever on the danger of speed.

While you are certainly a biased group ;), I'd like to hear your opinion.

I've been living in Germany, where - as you all know and envy :) - there are no speed limits on the highways (under certain reasonable conditions). Even so Germany has less casualties and accidents than Italy.

It is an indisputable fact that once you get into an accident, the higher the speed the worse the consequences. However this is not the same as saying that speed is the cause of accidents.

In my humble opinion a modern and well kept car - say for instance an RS6  - with a decent driver is safer, even at higher speeds, than an old or not well maintained car or with an unexperienced driver going slow.
Speed is a relative term, IMHO going within the speed limits in a crowded city street could be way more dangerous than going at "criminal" speeds on the highway at night.

What do you all think?

To quote JC on TG
"speed doesn't kill you, its stopping suddenly that does the damage"

The real problem in the UK is most people are taught to pass a driving test not how to drive so we end up with some very poor drivers and the speed limits that reflect that. Personally they should enforce limits where people are more likely to be injured and relax them on motorways etc because they are safer i.e. no pedestrians and everyone going in the same direction.
