So how have you coped in the snow?

Post by Holmax » Mon Dec 21, 2009 12:33 pm

Just wondering if any of you guys have had your rs6's out in the snow.
It's my first experience of 4wd in the snow (6" here in east yorkshire) and to be honest I wasn't that impressed. I was expecting bags of grip getting off the mark, but there wasn't. Very inclined to oversteer with any throttle.
Tyre's are not designed for this weather I know but I was expecting a bit better than this.
But it's good to know that I can still have fun oversteering and pretending I'm a rally driver at 10mph

I wouldn't expect good grip in the snow from any car with tyres as wide as the RS.

I had a really hairy experience years ago in my Quattro S6 Avant coming down Mont Ventoux, having negtotiated it successfully up hill in the thickish snow. Going down the mountain switchback was a different story. It was an auto and I had in creep mode and the wheels just locked and the car started to slide diagonally sideways toward the almost sheer drop at right hand side of the road. I was unable to do anything, I had a bit of steering and daren't use any power for fear of making things worse. I slid for what seemed like a lifetime before the car came to a gentle halt about three feet from the edge.

I nearly cacked my YFronts :dung:

Having said all that, I got stopped for speeding in Iceland in the snow last year, I got carried away with the stud tyred four wheel drive, now the grip on that was impressive. :smile_smoking:

I have winter tyres on and I did a few miles yesterday evening and this morning.
The traffic was so bad yesterday that I didn't really have a chance to try anything.
This morning I managed to put into practice once again the Audi snow driving course and I tried a few power steerings on some roundabouts and turns. The car over steers sooner than I expected but it's still easily manageable.
On a straight line I expected a bit more control, but as alphamail said, the tyres are just too wide (my winter are 265).
The normal A6s I had before were more "solid" on snow, but they were also lighter and with smaller tyres.
Given the current weather conditions I guess I'll have more opportunities to try the RS6 on snow :)

Happy Xmas everybody! :jump_clap:

an RS 6 is my daily driver so it's been pressed into service everyday since snow first arrived last friday in sussex - of course with slightly more suitable tyres it would be much better, but considering it's running standard summer tyres on 20in wheels and has 580ps i think it's surprisingly capable. be very deft with throttle, brakes and steering and it keeps on going where others don't. i find using the paddles in manual mode helps a lot with control, and the tail tends to come into play with use of the throttle quite nicely. of course it's no land rover, but just imagine how bloody useless an M5 would be, actually how useless any BMW would be....

Mine has stayed in the garage this week sadly, to many Xmas drinks and I use the train for the daily commute. When we had the snow back in Feb I had my A6 3.0TDI le Mans and that was pretty much as mentioned above, wheels/tyres not for task but copes well and puts most others to shame!

My local main road (a big hill) has been littered with ill thought attempts to navigate in BM's and Mercs... so sad

It's doing better than I expected with summer tires on. Having spent the last 7 years enjoying Canadian winters, I feel silly driving on summers with white stuff on the ground anyway, back in Toronto I'd have proper narrower winter tires on at least a month ago.
