Never the less, both cars are awesome. I thought I would never own an automatic car, but in flappy paddle mode, you at least feel more attached.

Both are much better cars than the R8, no question
Interesting comments from you and Condor. I was chatting with the wife about this last night as when I do trade up the RS4 in a few years I have three cars on the agenda, a Gallardo rather than an LP560 as it will still be too expensive, an R8 V8 or an C6 RS6 but possibly in saloon guise.

Wife hates the idea of a Gallardo, your comments on the R8 has put some doubts in but the all rounder would appear to be the RS6. I love the RS4's usability and discreetness to all but those who are in the know or are behind me, but with a second child imminent I can see the RS4 getting crowded in a couple of years when they start shooting up and an RS6 seems the logical upgrade.

My only concern with it is the gearbox even in flappy paddle mode as all tiptronic Audi's I have used have I feel been hesitant on upshift and particularly downshift even in sport mode. If it were S-Tronic I would have much more confidence.

PG - valid comments, what I can say is that the RS6's auto box is actually quite good. It has a very quick shift, and in flappy paddle mode, is very good around the twisties

Will it allow you to downshift when you want to? Thing I always found is if you wanted to downshift at anything aove 5500rpm on a 6750rpm limited car it wouldn't do it, it would wait and you could keep pressing the paddle until you burst a vessel in exasperation.

I have also had an RS4 (2 yrs) and an R8 (6months), and test drove RS6 for last two days. I'd agree that both RS are better than an R8, personally speaking.

To me, the R8 was neither one thing nor the other - too impractical and unsuited to town driving and a bit soft on track. Great car I'm sure, but it never grabbed me the way I thought it would (or wanted it to). It was always within its limits, and it felt a bit daft cruising round town at 15mph in a white R8 with look-at-me lights on. I'm sure some people would like that, but I'd prefer to walk softly and carry a big stick!

I had one of first B7 RS4s, and it was best car I've owned. The RS6 reminds me of a grown up version of it, and is much more in the stealthy mode which I prefer (esp in black demo)- having said that, it did get more looks than I expected.

Have now got a used Lotus for the sportscar bit (which blows R8 away in terms of usable limits on-road, lightness/size and sharpness - and is much cheaper on tyres etc on track)

My current daily driver is borrowed pending a purchase at some point, and lives on the street, but just found myself out with the tape measure checking I can fit the RS6 in garage next to Lotus...even though I wasn't planning to buy one yet...and now I find myself browsing web for info...slippery slope...

Having taken a hit on R8 value already, I was thinking 07/08 M5, at a decent price. I guess we'll see what dealer offers...
