RS6 vs C63 Touring

Post by DoctorD » Sat Jun 07, 2008 9:38 pm

We have both cars on loan for a test next week, so I'm looking forward to putting them through their paces. We will be filming a video at Silverstone on Monday, if anyone happens to be around - we'll be there from around 3pm.

I'm expecting the RS6 to come out on top, but having been driving around in the C63 the past few days I'm not so sure it will be so easily beaten. We'll let the V-box decide..

You're going to find the outcome slightly puzzling, as we did.

We drove them side by side in a drag race along the Hangar straight, and then Chris lapped them for an out lap and a flying lap on the full Silverstone GP circuit.

I discovered that the RS6 has the same torque-limiting profile built into its engine map as the RS4, despite turning off all traction and stability controls it will not launch hard in first gear. There's no doubt that once it gets going, the RS6 is a monster, but a few owners may be a little dissapointed by its initial performance at the traffic lights.

I took it for a 30 mile drive this morning, and managed 8mpg.... but that soon settled back to 18mpg+ once I had reset the trip and was driving more sensibly.

Anyone who has driven an M5, would find the RS6 so much better to drive in a straight line. It's got the sledgehammer torque of an E55 AMG, with the top-end wail of a V10. It doesn't feel turbocharged, more like a 7 litre V10, and accelerating hard becomes utterly addictive.

There's a great party piece in the RS6 of just accelerating to 4500 rpm in each gear and flipping the gear paddles, the changes are instantaneous and when each gear is changed there is a lovely 'woofle' noise that arises from the oval rear pipes. It's like the best playstation game ever.

It's a great engine and drivetrain, but I can't help feeling it NEEDS to be fitted to an R8 or something lighter. The RS6 is just too heavy. Under braking it squirrels left and right and the anchors try to contain all that mass, turning into corners is again a fight to contain the masses even though the basic chassis is well balanced.

However, despite approaching the RS6 as an irrelevance I came away seeing it as 'more' relevant than an M5, and just a very indulgent everyday car.

So, you'll be surprised at some of the figures we measured but I won't tell you which way around they were...

I think that the old RS6 isn't amazing off the line. Damn Auto Gearbox. I just want to dump the clutch and can't. A few people have mentioned this roar on upchange - sounds ace!!!

Is there a launch control start that is hidden into the software?

So when/where are we going to see those figures???

I would like to have it published this week, but this is a short week with us all being at Le Mans, so it may need to wait until early next week.

That'll explain why I can never launch the thing quite right even with everything switched off...

Can you explain more about how it works DoctorD? I've always suspected there is some electronic trickery going on here...presumably the result of the Bosch Motronic system employed?

Looking forward to the figures....

When removing driver error (it can happen 8)) i have constantly been able to hurl my RS4 down a runway from a 3K+ clutch drop & believe me the car makes very rapid progress & i doubt quicker launches are possible in most cars. Saying that it's not quite as funky as the launch control in the E60 M5, as that's the equivalent to Armageddon when deployed

What i have started noticing is my changes from 2nd to 3rd (when pushing hard) are being fluffed more then usual, so not sure if this is the car or me

[Temporary thread hijack]

Paul,

Well I'm getting 4.6 0-60 and a 13.0 1/4 mile so its not too bad but if I side-step the clutch in my car at 4K rpm it goes nowhere...

TBH it's more a ride & dump at 3k-3.5k, i just have the clutch biting at 3k ish & then drop the loud peddle & release the clutch (not a brutal release so still a touch of riding into well off the line) & the car takes off like a scalded cat. Managed to dispatch vitually anything alongside including 2 sorted 996 Turbos, as they both got bogged down at launch.

Only ever done this in the confines of an airfield though.

I understood it to be a conscious decision by Audi to preserve the clutch/transmission, at least on the RS4. The RS6 does feel very similar in the way it limits torque, but once up and running it's much quicker.

P.s. we will endeavour to publish the video feature next week, which will show the acceleration and lap comparison. :D
