I am seriously thinking about jumping into one.
I'd appreciate your thoughts around how they drive compared to what you had before?
There is me, my wife and 2 kids, 3 & 12 years old, I do at most 300 motorway miles per week and do frequent long runs. Perhaps 700mile round trips every 6-7 weeks.
Thoughts?

Wow,
I too had a 535D (Sport, with tuning chip) before the S8. My first (and possibly last) diesel.
It was a great car, but diesels do not inspire passion or enjoyment; you find yourself obsessed with MPG, not MPH!
The S8/A8 is in a different league, though; it's a time machine where you get in and find yourself at your destination without any apparent time (or fatigue) having occurred in the mean-time. Especially with that amazing B&O stereo...
The S8 is two cars really, a Jeckyll-and-Hyde character. One minute you can have it shmoozing beautifully in Comfort or Automatic suspension mode(if expensively!), the next a snarling, bellowing monster hunkered down in Dynamic mode; great stuff.
With those mileages the S8 would cost a lot in fuel and depreciate horribly; I hate to say it but the 4.2TDi or 3.0TDi would be better for that work. I only do small mileages a year (6000 or so).
Some nice cars there btw.
Before the 535 I had:
E39 M5 (disappointing: traction control always working, V8 intrusive, super-thirsty, long gear-changes)
Porsche 996 Turbo (too quick for UK roads so always on a leash/frustrating, lots tyre noise)
Audi RS2 (glorious engine note, real Q-car, still miss it)
The S8 is the BEST all-round of all them to be honest; Better built and as practical than all of them, more comfortable and just as fast as the E39. Almost as usably fast as the 996 (couldn't drive that flat out for more than a few seconds to be honest, else bye-bye license), engine note as good (if quieter) as RS2's and almost as discrete/Q-car.
