S5 ECU

Hi.

So my S5 (2008, 4.2 V8) went into the garage for it's annual MOT and full service.

This is when my problems started. The garage reported issues with getting it started and when they investigated further they found a fault on my ECU which meant there was an "intermittent earthing problem". It seemed fine when I dropped it off, I'd not noticed any particular problem though every now and again it wouldn't start - usually because I'd not fully depressed the clutch it seemed. Anyway, now apparently it won't start at all and the garage has identified the issue as one of three ECUs in the car.

The problem is that I'm not 100% sure that the problem itself wasn't caused by the garage themselves, even though they are a VAG specialist, and supposedly look after a few R8s - the bill just keeps going up and I am fairly sure they are trying to fleece me. They'd had the car three days before they eventually broke it to me that a fault had developed..

Now before I say anything slanderous (or is that libel when it's printed?) and name said garage in question, I am trying to see what the AVERAGE price is of a new ECU. Apparently a 2nd hand one would work though it would mean my immobiliser would no longer function correctly and would likely invalidate my insurance. But given there is a major price difference between the two, I thought I should at least ask here..

The part number is 8t0 907 560 f. It's the one that specifically does something with the starter motor and therefore hence it won't start (according to the garage).

Anyone else had similar issues? Did they wind up going to a main dealer for something like this? Did they lube up properly before they got a good shafting? Normally I like them to buy me dinner first..
