the v10 s6 project

Post by v8a6 » Sun Feb 01, 2015 4:24 am

hey guys!

Finally got the v10 s6 project thread started on AudiRevolution. I am trying to be as detailed as possible, since a lot of the stuff we are investigating hasnt really been explored before, by anyone with an eye for performance modifications.

check it out

Cheers!

I like what your doing. Wish I didn't sell mine a few years ago now, but am on the look out for another.

What sort of gains are you expecting from the headers?

The guys I am working with are a lot of the same guys who developed the really fast NA B6/B7 S4 cars with bolt-ons. So, basing our expectations off of what the S4s gained from JHM headers and supporting mods (about 55 AWHP at the wheels and 65 AWTQ at the wheels) we would hope that the v10 will gain about the same per cylinder.

So, if the stock car is about 435chp, then I hope we are somewhere around 525-550 hp at the engine by the time we are done. Long tube headers are known to gain massive amounts of torque, so I'm hoping to see them at about 525-550 tq at the engine.

The magazines reported pretty fast 1/4 mile times for these cars, that dont seem to be possible to replicate on stock cars. We ran the car three times, and got 14.6 back to back to back. Another guy on AudiRevolution with a catback and APR tune ran an 1/8th, and when extrapolated would have ended up with a time of about 14.1 on the 1/4. Since dynos can be manipulated, we prefer to do all testing at the track. If you want to see how fast a car is, you measure how fast a car is. Dynos only tell part of the story.

So, if we could get the car into the 12s, then I would consider that a huge success. Also, in the process, we are making the car run cooler, more reliable, and easier and cheaper to service. So hopefully it will be a WIN all around.

I wouldnt feel too bad about selling yours. If you want to pick up another one, the prices seem to be getting very low as the car falls out of warranty. If you plan to do these types of modifications, a warranty is probably wasted anyway. So better to get the car for dirt cheap, and save the money for mods.

Nice gains, an am looking forward to your progress. I go through cars pretty quickly to be honest and swapped the S6 for the current range rover, but as good as a family car it is, it just hasn't jelled for us (enough my wife fancies another s6).

Will be interesting to see what you can achieve going N/A and for what cost. I considered a few years ago about going the N/A route with my M5, but ended up fitting a S/C.

Good Luck

Well, we haven't got the gains quite yet. Everything is exploratory, because no one has really done this type of thing before with the v10. So, while we hope to meet certain performance goals, we wont know exactly how much is gained until everything is done.

The supercharger route would have been awesome. NA is always going to be more expensive dollar per HP. The plan from the beginning with this car was to remove the engine, and check everything out, including the timing components on the rear of the motor. So, even if a SC kit was available for the v10 S6, we still would have wanted to do that to make sure we were building everything on a solid platform.

And once the engine was out, it only made sense to do the headers, since the team working on the car are the same guys who do the JHM headers for the S4. Plus, you would not want to do a supercharger without doing something about the exhaust and cats on the car. The stock 600 cell cats placed so close to the engine are one of the causes for the extreme heatsoak that these cars experience, and other issues. They are nothing but trouble.

Did you do the Vortech kit on your M5? Was that the v10 M5 or the v8? That must have been awesome! If I ever do a supercharger on the S6, it will likely be a Vortech based kit. Again, something like the JHM Vortech S4 and S5 kits. Those are the only guys in North America that I would trust to add a supercharger to the car.

Thanks for following along! And hope you find another S6 sometime soon.

Indeed, what you are doing is great and the right way about going about it too.

I'll have another Audi in a few months, either one of these or C5 RS6, will see whats available when the time comes.

I was the first (as far as we are aware on the forums) to fit the ESS 575 (E39 M5), but it's been modified and adapted to be completely different now, the only remaining part is the S/C (Vortech). It's running about as much power as I want now so am happy with it.

Keep up with the posts, cheers
