Oh I say... Just bit the bullet and fitted a set of 265 35 r19 Michelin Pilot Alpin 2 and ordered a fresh set of pirellis p zero for the summer as current michelin pilot sport were well worn (accounted for a lot of weird grinding noises when in full lock on wet roads).

Got a reasonable deal for all eight tyres including storage of the pirellis.

Anyway, found a road with nice compacted snow and tested the acceleration. Given these tyres haven't been worn in the grip was fantastic. Had a bit of slippage but then it suddenly bit and we were off. Braking also good. They will get better once run in.

Reassuring given that others were sliding around all over the place. Good job my fiat has winter tyres too otherwise there would have been a nasty accident this morning. We stopped, he didn't. If you haven't already, get winter tyres. I have thus far used Pirelli snowsport on the s3, conti winter contact 830 on the s4 (for sale soon), goodyear ultra ultra grip on the panda, and now michelin and all have been amazing.

All quattros grind at the front on full lock, nothing to worry about.

Eight 19s would be 2000 quid?! :o

Yes winters rock, and yes its all the other morons on the roads you have to worry about....

Yes. Not cheap, but if i get 20k out of each set (?) that'll be around 4 years out of them. £10 a week. Peanuts compared to the petrol cost! Had i gone smaller rim for the winter tyres i was finding that a set on ebay plus tyres wasn't much different to a full set of Michelins but I was never sure of the correct offset, plus I felt compelled to get a spare wheel of the same size too. There wasn't much in it. Seems the 235 45 r18 are mainly so you can fit snow chains. Never been on a road that needed/demanded them yet, and have driven a few times to France and Austria.

20K out of a set of tyres is optimistic!

In an s6 or generally?

Got something approaching that in the S4. Clearly I am not trying hard enough!

Has anyone used these snow chains?

How do you drive? I've never got more than 15K from a set of tyres...but these were all front wheel or rear wheel drive cars.

Looking back, perhaps I have never gone 20k before changing because I have never owned a car long enough. Had the S4 for 3 years and had one tyre change all round, plus the winter tyres for one season. I base my optimistic appraisal on the S4. We did 30k in that car, and I don't think I drive like my dad. Don't remember changing the S3's tyres, except again, for the winters for one season, but only had that for 18 months. Michelin's are supposed to be a bit tougher than the rest(?)

To match the standard 19" wheel's offset, you'd need an 8.5J wheel at +46.

Without running into fitment issues (brakes aside) you can go as high as +58 or as low as +30. The lower the offset the more the wheel will "stick out."

Have seen a couple of sets of wheels part no. 8J0 601 025 AG 9Jx19 ET52. Can anyone say definitively if these would fit an 07 S6 Avant? Thanks.

That's the same as standard so should be fine.

Anyone know of a good tyre fitting service around the Richmond upon Thames area?

Just had some tyres fitted by a well known national tyre fitter, and they have put the front tyres on the wrong way around. What's the word I am looking for...?

Not sure what long term effects that will have had on the car or the tyres. Have driven 500 miles and tbh didn't notice (too trusting, clearly).

Good job we were coming down a winding, icy mountain pass in a blizzard...

Total 'wow this is some thread resurection' but I don't see the point in posting exactly the same theme of thread when its sill on the first page of the C6 forum:

I was looking into the possibilities of an 18ins wheel on the v10 S6 either for winter or just for stelth / comfort and see that on the Mk2 TT there are some 9x18 wheel options which have the 52mm offset. The one's I have seen so far are both 10 spokes, one has a diamond cut option (not ideal for winter wheels!).

I would have though that on a 9j rim a 235 would be an ok fitment? Slightly stretched but ok?? (225's fitted to 8j on mk1 audi tt). 245/40 or 245/45 for winters would be good?
