Intake opinions

Any thoughts on intakes:
  • VWR
  • Revo
First one is quite a bit more expensive than the other, and I can see a single pipe being smoother than a multi-part. However, Revo one is an open filter in a section of the engine bay, while the VWR is taking a feed direct from the front of the car.

Anyone got any particular experiences of both and which way they went in the end?

VWR is sealed so quieter and better spool than Revo but is limited to around 400ps. Revo will flow 450+ps but is noisy imo.

Nige,

Thanks for that, however, when I went to pick up the car it appeared that the main dealer wasn't aware that the car had......a Revo intake and a Stage 1 tune already applied.

I need to take the car to the nearest Revo outlet to confirm whether it still has the map (I think it does as a quick boot with a colleague who has a Golf R proved he was kept honest), but I think it does. I just need to work out what RON rating map has been put on as I don't have any paperwork. Revo confirmed the chassi received a Stage 1 in April 2017.

I agree though, the Revo sounds a little like a hoover when it picks up. I don't really mind that though.

That's a nice brucie bonus, however Revo are no longer developing for the S3 and if you want to go further than stage 1 you would be better off with MRC, R-Tech or Unicorn.

No longer developing, or no longer available?

No longer developing - they are way behind the other guys.

Is no-longer-developing really an issue though?

Surely it’ll be a case of they’ve taken that generation as far as they want, and I suppose I’m ok with that. Ultimately Stage 1might be as far as I want to go, and I know it’s a slippery slope but this is my DD and I do about 60miles a day, typically. I don’t want a fragile car.

I’m after a DD that doesn’t feel sluggish compared to my previous cars. If I was chasing numbers I’d have held out and spent more on a Stage 1 S4. But I’m not.

Still, worth knowing that Revo are done with the 8P.

Not at stage 1, but beyond that the tuning has moved on quite a bit and Revo have been left behind. I was running Stage 2+ map via MRC for 3 years without any error codes and still managed to get high 30's MPG on a steady run. It's more about torque delivery in these cars and although you don't need a dsg map, the tuners need to get around the software torque limit on the dsg ecu to maximise this.

Biggest improvements for me over the years were;
Stage 1 remap
100 Cell downpipe
H&R ARBs
HPFP (with map tweak)

So did you have the Stage 2 on a different car, or is it just that the Stage 1 was the biggest improvement?

Not much difference with a stage 2 map. I fitted the downpipe to my stage 1 map and it picked up earlier and improved torque. The std downpipe has some big restrictions in the design.
