Re: Steering wheel refurbishment

Post by RossDagley » Mon Nov 03, 2014 3:50 pm

Hi Guys :)

I got an email back with some answers to my questions - the email unedited except for XXXXX where I removed the reference to use when getting the forum group buy discount. They are happy for those who want to pay now and send later ("two" people referred to in the email below) to do so.
Hi Ross

The for the messages and I think you cam with good idea so let's do it:

1. Ref: XXXXX
Those two people can send the wheels when they're ready.

2. Paypal is fine and the payment would be requested after the wheel/wheels arrive.

3. Yes, I could remove existing material and cover with the new one - recommended for leather.
Due to alcantara is thinners I would recommend to cover over the leather to keep the rim nice and chunky.

4. Both leathers (smooth and perforated) are available

Looking forward to haring for you soon.

Regards
Jack
They also sent over some photos:

Appreciate this is an RS3 wheel, but I think it's showing the alcantara over the leather (chunky wheel):

So - is everyone interested happy? I think I'm ready to go myself. If we're all happy, then I'll start a formal list of people for number sake in a new thread, as per the forum rules :)

I'm up for this Ross, I'd definitely like the Alcantara, and love the chunky look.

So that everyone knows, I have bought this wheel

It takes the round airbag, so should go straight on as temp wheel to keep you moving. If anyone wants to borrow it thats fine, I'll post it out to whoever goes first (presume Ross) and then it can be sent on to the next person and so on before coming back to me.

Schweet!! :D I'm in! Let me know when you need my money/wheel!! And I too will be having alcantara!

Btw do you have a direct email or contact at the refurbishers? It's just that Id like to get my gearknob/gaitor refurbed at the same time and just need to seem if it's ok and to get a price! :)

Also, anyone have a guide to removing the steering wheel? :D

Thanks again for sorting this!

According to the forum rules on group buys, I need to create a seperate thread for the actual list, referring back to this thread - I think that's to keep it simple as to who's paid, who's in, etc and this thread is for chat about the topic i guess!

Anyway - I'll create the other thread now. :)

I'd be grateful to borrow the wheel for sure. Shall I PM you my address details? Do you want something towards the postage?

Cheers!

Brilliant, you sir are a gent.

Yep, PM me address and I'll get it too you mate. I'll cover your postage mate as you've done all the leg work and sorted us a great deal !

Might be worth mentioning that there is a donor wheel to borrow in the list thread as well, might encourage a few people.

Piece of piss mate!! About 5mins work!

Each side of the steering wheel there are 2 little tabs. Remove these to get to 2 T50 torx.
These hold the airbag in place. Once undone, slide out airbag. Unclip a large yellow wiring connector and a small black connector. Once airbag is out of the way use a 12mm triple square bit to remove the bolt holding the wheel to the column. Before removing the wheel use a permenant market to mark both wheel and column. That way the cars wheels don't need to be straight!! And that's it!! :biggrin3:

Do you need to remove a fuse? I'd no doubt end up setting the airbag off

Sorry for the delay in replying - I've had a horrible last week in non-car related things.

Anyway - I'll be taking mine off this weekend and sending it off - I'll let you know how it goes. I'll try and grab some pictures of the process throughout.
