Right. Not strictly an RS question but seeing as its similar in some ways to my RS6......

My mum has a 2001 A6 saloon 2.5 tdi. She took it to get some bodywork repairs done this morning and when she got it back the mileage reading that was visible before had disappeared. She took note of the mileage when she dropped it off incase the bodyshop decided to use it for a runaround. After the work had been done the screen was completely balnk. When she started the car up it then lit up with 'DEF'.

Does anyone know what this means? Glasgow audi are unsure of the fault, and can only replace the whole system. Surely it can't be that bad.

Can it?

Intrigued me, so I've had a look on the interweb thingy and can't find much - save the odd company that charges to clear the message

PetrolDave will be along sometime with a better answer (I guess...) but in the meantime I'd take issue with the bodyshop, as they've obviously screwed it up somehow

'DEF' is a generic fault indication that the instruments show when something is corrupted and/or confused.

Check the instrument coding is correct and clear any fault codes. If that doesn't clear the message, then AFAIK it's time for a new instrument cluster.

Cheers guys. Ive told her to head back to Audi for a Diag Test and to clear the faults. Hopefully that will cure it. Failing that she can always claim against the bodyshop. At the end of the day its thier fault (and it gets dark...lol).
