Suggest you make life easier for yourself and buy the genuine Ross-Tech cable for the following reasons....

a) It works out the box. many folks have struggle with the replica cables.
b) You can use the latest vesion of the software with a proper cable, the ebay cables only support older software, and limited functionality
c) You will get support from the manufacturer if you have any issues.
d) You can sell it on when your done and recoup most of your outlay.

eBay USB cables normally come with an unwanted optional extra ..... USB drivers that either won't install or work once and not the next time you connect the lead. The cure is often to re-install Windows...

Spend the £££ and get the genuine article from Ross-Tech, for all the reasons above.

I have just purchased an Ebay cable and it works just fine. Installed ok and runs the shareware version of rosstech vagcom. You can still register the software to get the full version with all the functionalty

Just wait until you have a problem (which with a third party USB cable WILL happen....) then when you get zero support and you are tearing your hair out trying to work out what's wrong with your car you'll see the value of buying the genuine article.

That's not a hypothetical situation - I've seen it happen to dozens of people over the last two years (I'm a moderator of another Audi related website), and ALL of them say they wish they had bought the real deal.

I can't justify spending 250$ for a diagnostic tool i would use maybe less than 1 time every 2-3 months.

How much does your time and stress cost?

I know lots of people who have bought cheap rip-off interfaces and wasted hours or even days trying to get them to work reliably.

When all you want to do is get your car working properly it's a false economy IMHO.

This is pretty much what you miss... By fully registered we refer to the old $99 versions, so it's not just the "cable" you are buying for the higher price... But at the end its your choice.

Common difference between versions and between Fully Registered and Shareware.

Shareware:

Cannot do AutoScan
Won't display text for all fault codes
No Basic Settings (so no TBA, Xenon levelling, etc or checking timing on TDI's)
No Adaptation Saving (so no changing of locking/lights/horn behavior)
No Output Tests
No Tech Support from Ross-Tech

Limitations of 311 and 409 even if Fully Registered:

No Generic OBD-II
Won't work with CAN-Bus vehicles
Fewer fault code definitions and label files
No built-in Activation (you'll be limited to a single PC)
No Advanced Measuring Blocks
No Acceleration Measurement
No Automated Service Reset
No Guided Readiness Generation
