Is it possible to modify the chip (eprom) with vag-com ?

Post by C-24 » Fri Nov 17, 2006 9:22 pm

Hi,

I would like to know if is it possible to reprogram the chip of the audi s4 via that software ?

I think I am going to upgrade the S4 and I would like to modify the eprom settings myself.

Also, where can I find the settings of some modified S4 (with stage 3, stage 4...) ?

I am asking this because I saw the vag-com software, and I didn't find any "eprom settings".

Thanks for helping!

what do you mean eprom setting?

eprom for what?

mileage?

Or tuning.

If its tuning, then NO you cant use vag com.

And if you dont know what youre doing even if you do have the right kit, you could well and truly blow up your engine and kill your turbos.

Only reputable tuners should mess about with ECU mapping.

If you dont know what youre doing youre surely gonna have a bery big paper weight.

Just some advice mate. Get down to someone to map it for you. Its not an easy task. Any no offense but by your question, if you dont know what to use to change the map to a stage 3 4 etc. then you shouldnt bechanging settings in anyway.

Im quite proficcient at putting generic maps on jap cars. Simple stuff. Even then Im very careful. Even with some experience, I wouldnt dream of touching or messing about with a car of which I dont unerstand the ECU management system. They are not all the same and after trying to look at the S4 Bosch system, I gave up as it was beyon complex for my knowledge.

Please dont bother mate. Just trying to save you some cash and ruining your car.

VAG com is use for diagnosing faults and changing very simple settings and logging the cars real time values etc etc.

Its not a tuning piece of kit.

Hope this helps.

I've done some research and the Bosch Motronic ECU is full of checksums which mean you dont just change code direct you have to make sure the checksums add up etc.
There is a program out there that can do this but I concluded that if you want to do just your own car, pay a good company such as MRC.
If you want to make money doing many cars, become an agent for someone who has already done all the hardwork.

My problem is that here where I live (switzerland)
there's nobody to do that. You'll understand that I can't go to see AMD or MRC to remap my chip.

So I would upgrade the car till stage 2,3 or directly 4. And as I upgrade it, I would change the settings of the chip. But I'd only use
settings that other s4 fellows would have tested. I think this is possible.

If I understand, I need the Vag-Com for diagnostics, and a special dvd (I saw some on ebay for 4GBP only)
and of course the OBD II cable ?

You know, I don't wanna mess with the car, it's just I don't want to pay a remap everytime I change some performance parts... And I think
that the diagnostic module is very useful.

Correct me if I'm wrong,

Thanks!

Would it be possible to send the ECU to someone for a generic chip to be put in? However, might be best if the car was given a health check to make sure you are going to benefit from any changes.

A second thought is to drive up to MTM in Germany?

Maybe it is possible, but it's somewhat not easy to do : sending the chip manytimes to remap it, and you can't drive the car for let's say 1 or 2 weeks...

Aren't Sportec based in Switzerland? Or how about buying a second ECU so you can post one to a tuner?

I don't really understand what you want to do. Either you apply tuning from some vendors. It may include parts as well as chip tuning which in that case means that you bought it from it and got everything, including the chip updates.
Or you are doing your own changes, mixing your own parts. In that case nothing proves that someone else update will match your car with the changes you did.

For case one, I guess there are enough tuners in Switzerland to do what you want. Including distributors of most of the big brands from Germany (MTM, ABT etc...).
For case two, it is a paintful trip and I an not sure your car will survive...

Sportec are in Switzerland. My car has been chipped by them. But it costs 1700~GBP, and it's not really different than MRC or AMD I think. Yes there are others tuners : powerchips (www.powerchips.ch), but they are really not efficient, I think you get 305hp for the S4... It's funny because last year statements were the following for the s4 : 315hp, 510nm, top speed 290km/h (181mph)... now they changed it, you can't trust them IMO.

First, when I get the Vag-Com and cables, I'm going to check my cars. Then, with the appropriate software, I'll see if tuning the chip is really complicated...I just need the settings of someone else who did the remap, at the same stage I would be.
Do you guys know where can I find some updates for remapping the S4 ?

Maybe you ought to take a look at www.andywhittaker.com - this guy is a 'coder' and seems to know his stuff (he also talks about the checksums for code blocks - but doesn't reveal the polynomial generators). If you read his stuff on the Bosch Motronic ECU he ends up by saying he gave up trying to disassemble the code - it was just TOO complex!

You may want to follow the advice of the other guys posts here, and not meddle - you would very likely end up with a slagged ECU.........
