vag com

Post by mrdeli » Wed Aug 13, 2008 4:00 pm

Hi all,

About a year ago I bought a VAG COM lead from ebay (non original as it turned out!). The lead also came with a driver disk.

It all worked fine - however earlier this year I had my house broken into (they where searching for my RS4 keys whilst I was on my hols!!!) and they took my laptop with the driver on.

Has anyone got a link or a copy of a driver that is likely to work?

The lead is a USB lead, but I think the driver 'fooled' the computer into thinking it was a serial lead.

Thanks for any help (I just want to adjust the seatbelt bleeper, locking etc.)

Regards to all. Mark

The driver will likely be specific to the chipset in the lead.

Any identifying marks on the lead you can use as a Google search?

Since you know who made the lead, why not just go to the source for the driver?

Thanks - I have since tried this driver - but it only coonects to the radio - the other modules do not work.

I know the original is probably the way to go, but as I only want to make a few changes (all of which worked ok on my last laptop with this lead) - I thought it was worth some effort trying to get the one I've already paid for going.

Has anyone any experience with an Autonostics lead?

Thanks Mark

If I had a pound for every time I've heard something like this about a non Ross-Tech lead then I would be a millionaire by now (OK slight exaggeration!).

IMHO the hassle and stress just doesn't justify the cost saving.

IMO the only way to go is buy the real lead.

Need to know the answers to 2 questions to be able to answer that:

1) What car have you got?
2) Does your laptop have USB?

B5 RS4 or C5 RS6 - a lead with dual K-line

B7 RS4 or C6 RS6 - a lead with dual K-line plus CAN

The most future proof purchase is a HEX-USB+CAN - that will work with all of the RS models, and most laptops now don't have COM ports but do have USB ports.

I support the Ross-Tech option - having recently bought the cable from the USA, had it delivered in a couple of days and had same day response to queries from the guys at Ross-Tech.
Everyone is unique, just like you and me.

Likewise after many years of putting off getting the original lead, I finally took the step to get the HEX-USB+CAN and can't believe I lasted so long without it. Using VCDS now is in a different world as it connects to controllers that previous non-Ross-Tech leads did not.

OK, so it's not cheap but it is an easily resellable used item.
