Just getting Vag Com

Guys,

Only really want this to start with to check over my S6 once a month to see if its running well, not really to twak it about or anything.
This might be a silly question but if I just want to do an auto scan do I do this with the engine running? should I get all I need like this or do I do it both with the engine running and without it running?
It looks complicated thats why im starting easy..
