R8 Plus battery confusion

Post by NorthernBoy » Fri Feb 02, 2018 7:27 pm

Evening all.

I bought a new AGM battery for my recently acquired 2013 R8 Plus, and asked Audi to fit it while they were carrying out a service.

I bought size “019” after checking on a couple of different shops’ websites via the model name and reg number.

I’ve just collected the car and the new battery wasn’t up installed as the technician doing the work claimed that it was the wrong size. Annoyingly he didn’t write down what the right size was, and had gone home before I arrived. His note claimed that the new one was 95 Ah, which is true, and that it should be 68 Ah. The capacity, of course is irrelevant, it’s the size that matters, and he’s not mentioned the right size.

Can someone confirm which size is right? I’m hoping that he’s wrong, as sending back a 25kg battery is going to be annoying and expensive.

019 is 353 x 175 x 190

Thanks.

The capacity of the battery is not an issue at all and you'll find that 95 AH is correct for the V10 Plus.

He is incorrect that your battery should be 68 AH because that battery capacity is for an R8 GT ( I have one) which is a much smaller battery.

Many R8 owners have changed to the lighter smaller battery to save weight.

Regardless, either one will fit on the battery tray so he is talking out of his back side but to install the battery, its a 2 hours labour job so maybe he didn't have the time considering you said he had gone home already.

Hope this helps.

Further more, in most cases it is Audi's policy not to fit customer's supplied parts especially if its not an genuine one. You would had to sign an disclaimer if he were to tackle the job anyway. So maybe, it was just an excuse to mug you off IMO.

Thanks. I think that you’re right, that he just didn’t have the time. I’d got prior agreement that they were fine to fit the battery I supplied, and they’d done it previously on my last R8.

I’ll write to the general manager, and ask that they do it without charging me extra, as the only reason I went with this dealer was the agreement that they’d do the battery work.

Good luck mate :)

Get them to fit it for FREE for messing you about :)

For your reference, below are the part numbers for the R8 GT battery which are smaller and lighter than yours. I'm now toying with the idea of fitting a Voltphreaks battery in the near future.... only weighs in at 8.75 lbs :)

Audi: 8K0 915 105 C
Bosch: 0 092 S30 080

Cheers

Thanks. I need the highest capacity, lowest self-discharge battery that I can fit, as the car doesn’t get used often, and is in a garage without power (or even daylight), so I can’t leave it on charge. I’ve had to jump start it a couple of times recently and want to give myself the best chance of having it start when I do go out to use it.

I’d also asked if the technician could let me know if isolating the battery was OK, or if I’d need to be entering codes and / or dealing with a problem afterwards but I got nothing back on that.

Both the size of the batteries will last about 3 weeks before they are dead.

Buy yourself a Ctek battery sense and have it fitted with the battery at the same time. This will allow you to monitor your battery strength via bluetooth from your phone so you'll know when to take her out if it gets a bit low.

Same thing happen to me when I wanted to change the battery on my V10 plus. As you can’t get in to measure the dimensions of the battery, I double checked with the suppliers before ordering one. It wasn’t until the front end was taken apart did I realise it was bigger that the original one in the car. I didn’t want to go through the trouble of putting it back together and doing it again at a later date, I fitted the larger battery with only one of the three mounting brackets. I think the plus has a smaller battery than the normal V10.
