Upgrades - Advice Please !

Post by Northern Chap » Mon Aug 29, 2016 7:28 pm

Warranty aside......

I have a March 2015 V10 Plus Coupe 548bhp with 4k miles.... S Tronic.... Carbon Aero Pack.....

Im looking to do Spa 2-3 times a year with friends.... Have been doing Spa since 2004 in various motors & to date a 2 min 48 in a well spec'd E36 M3 is my best....

So....

Im looking for the following upgrades ( unless some can convince some or all are not worthwhile ? )

1. Suspension ( needs firming up much more for track use )
2. Exhaust ( thoughts on make please & best gains ? )
3. Re-map & filter change ( who ? Why ? )
4. Spare set of alloys dressed in track tyres ( any thoughts on tyre make/model ? )

Thanks in advance

Chris

Wow, I know the B7 RS4 suffers a power loss on the dyno, but that is 300 bhp down on quoted!!!!!!! :bigblink:

You dick tease - no posts for 10 days, and you now tell us you've made a purchase, WHERE ARE THE PICS?! Rule 1 !

Suspension, exhaust, filter and remap will make negligible difference compared to high temp brake fluid, brake pads and track tyres.

(but yes I'd want an exhaust)

Might be mistaken, but I think Classba has two sets of wheels? And someone posted the other day they'd swapped alloys - maybe they have their old set for sale?

Having also driven Spa many times (sadly my best time to date is 3:01 in my F10 M5), i'd suggest tyres would be the best upgrade to your R8. Cup Sport 2's appear to be the tyre of choice, however i've no idea of they're available in the sizes you'd require, but they do have many variants. Sadly Michelin don't make them in the OEM size for my car so i have to stick with MPSS which are still highly rated & more than hold their own on track, but Cup Sports would likely give me a couple of seconds.

A remap i'd guess could free up an additional 5% power/torque so might be enough to make it worthwhile & i guess MRC would be the best place to start, or perhaps Litchfield & DMS may offer something.

On mine I went with BMC filters and I am very happy with them up to now, which ever filter you do go for you need to make sure they're a dry or at least a very very lightly oiled filter. I looked around for quite some time, and here is the link for the best price I could find, some places charge crazy money for the exact same filters.

Exhaust, I've an armytrix valve tronic on now and the thing screams, very exotic sounding now over OEM, it's just insane! Capristo X pipe is a very popular choice with these motors also. Topgear in Bridport, dorset have just launched their exhaust for the facelift V10 and they've been getting very good reviews for a fraction of the price of the capristo. Theres even more choices if you're not bothered about having a valved exhaust, for me I like having a quiet and loud mode. Theres mountains of material to read on the R8talk forum about exhausts and it's also a good place to keep an eye on used exhaust bargains as people trade in for the new R8.

Suspension, myself I'd try tracking it before changing anything and see how you go, any firmer and I think it would be a terrible drive day to day. However if you do upgrade I think you'd easily move on the Plus coilovers as they are quite sort after for those looking to replace leaking mag ride.

The S tronic apparently benefits massively from a TCU remap. I'm still reading up on this though and I am still not sure of the best place to source a TCU flash loader, theres old and newer versions of the software about now.

The exhaust is by far the best upgrade for these cars though, letting the V10 sing a little louder is a massive smile generator

dont mess with the suspension - Audi set that up specifically for the Plus

don't bother with any remap

just get some Michelin Cup tyres for the track and have some Castrol SRF fluid in and you are good to go
