I absolutely love my 911 991.1 TTS. I considered changing it for a 991.2 this year and had a good look at a new R8 V10+ too.RSQ wrote:Your quote is spot on - It is funny how driving other things make you realise quite how good what you have is:SteveG wrote:Sometimes 911's need time to grow on you. You can take em anywhere though, and like mini's people tend to like em. Turbo S will be nice. I like the Merc however.
911 GTS - Non-Turbo, revs like crazy, mental to drive fast but has back seats and is reasonably discrete (mine is all black)
AMG GTS - Lots of noise but otherwise just another E-class (sorry!); long time since I have been that disappointed in a car.
R8 V10+ I think the cabin of the new one is quite special and honestly better than the one in the Porsche. But, hardly any storage space for bags when travelling (which I do a lot) and I think the long distance cruise will be less tiring in the Porsche. But I have one for the weekend in a couple of weeks to drive alongside the Porsche so will do some real world testing. I had one of the last model V10+s for a test drive weekend a year or so ago and was able to scare myself silly quite quickly...
I have an option on a 911 Turbo S for March delivery but honestly my GTS is around £100k and the Turbo S will be at £150k and I am not so sure it is 50% better.
I think the most fun I have is when musing over what to buy and when, test driving is a great pastime and as long as I buy something expensive once a year the dealers seem quite happy to indulge me. Quite an expensive hobby though....
I'm not keen on what Porsche has done with certain aspects of the 991.2. I like the rear lights but don't like the front, I dislike the new engine cover, the .1 is a work of art. The power increase is unnoticeable. I do like the new MMI and the steering wheel. Overall the .2 is not really something I could get excited about with the negatives (just) outweighing the positives... so I looked at the R8.
The virtual cockpit is a stunning feature, far better than I expected it to be and looks properly integrated (unlike the Merc S class Coupes with a couple of not-that-high-res laptop screen sat there). The lack of dials matters but it is overshadowed by the huge feature set of having a configurable screen. I was also pretty impressed by the interior of the car, felt enclosed and very high quality. Not better than the Porsche perhaps but on a par. The engine noise.. well there is no competition.. the 911 sounds OK, the R8 pretty damn awesome. But for me the external aesthetics of the car is where it falls apart. The front is like an insect with a huge snout, just weird. I actually like the side of the car but the rear is a step backwards for me and looks like it was designed by another team altogether . I thought that when I saw the new R8 in the flesh I'd like it more.. nope. I thought it would grow on me... nope. It isn't practical, MPG will be nothing like the 911 and the 911 felt more comfortable to drive too.
For a brief moment I considered the new Jag F-Type SVR. The wife just bought a white F-Type S cab and it is stunning but the Mrs made it quite clear that that wasn't an option F-Types do look bloody good, sabre tooth cat at the front, clever design. Actually I think the SVR loses that slightly, fangs removed.
I'm now hoping that the next model 911 TTS will do the job and hope the C63 Ed1 will scratch the short term itch
