will be interesting to hear some feedback once you have had time in all the three cars mentioned - saw Evo just gave the Gen 2 Turbo S a review and whilst still the top of the pile, the comments about how it stacks up to the 570S and the R8 are curious:

I've driven Gen 1 Turbo S and new R8. I'd take the 911, it looks and feels like a 150k car. The Audi doesn't.

I carwow'd the R8 out of interest. 4 offers with zero discount, 1 with 7%. A free tank of fuel if collected on a weekday counts for bugger all, that's pretty insulting as an incentive on a car of that value. Seriously these people need to get real. The R8 is not a 150k car, it might just be a 130k carat a push.

Looks like the R8 test drive won't now be happening on the 7th as they've stipulated if i want the car for a day on my own i need to self insure Fully Comp. Using my own insurer it could costs a couple of hundred ££'s as i'd need to undergo a full change of car & pay the relevant differences which given insurance costs have risen would mean to re-insure my M5 after the test drive would cost me money as well as the uplift in premium to have the R8 as my insured car for 24-48hrs, along with any applicable admin charges.

Will look at online day insurance options, but i'd be fairly sure due to the value of the car these are going to be very expensive. Out of principle i'm not paying a sh1t load of cash just to try a car i'm thinking of buying.

Porsche on the other hand are happy for me to take there Turbo S out next weekend for 2 days on there insurance.

"A free tank of fuel if collected on a weekday". What the actual f4ck? Maybe makes sense if you're punting out 2.0 TDI sline A3's to Wayne who works in Accounts Payable but for a brand new £150k R8 that's risible.

Just prey they don't sell it first....it is for sale and they are hard to come by.

I've picked up a 4S cab for the weekend. Scribble here, keys here, full tank of fuel, have some fun, see you Monday. No umming, no ahhing. Audi dealers need to learn.

Yes. I know the DP of one dealer and I'd be confident he'd sort something. Bottom line, however, is that I'm not going to buy an R8 so it's a waste of time.

That's poor form on behalf of the dealer. I'd push them to sort it themselves
I had one for a few days (admittedly cut short by a deer), but I didn't have to do anything other than agree to pay £15 to reduce the excess from £1000 to £50
I signed to say I collected it, they gave me the keys, and the dealer told me to drive it like I'd stolen it and not to bring it back with the fuel light on

I agree. But that's fairly normal for Audi stealers though.

They'd better not sell it, although i heard they have 2 now so hopefully nothing scuppers my weekend of fun next weekend.

I can only manage 1st thing Sat to last thing Sun as will probably have to head down to Suffolk on the Monday morning for a couple of days & although would be nice to try on roads i travel fortnightly, they might not appreciate it coming back with over 1k miles extra.

Was shocked Audi won't insure the R8 Demos but was told the fleet policy they use is designed more for the conventional models & as such won't stretch to cars North of £100k. Does seem odd they won't insure a model of car they're keen to sell but just heard back & they'll extend the 1 day to 2 days & i got an insurance quote for £90 (with a £2500 excess) so although still leaves a bad taste in my mouth i may for the sake of £90 have a 48hr play.

Edited to say my local dealer is a more local chain, not National which i guess could make a difference as they only own 3 North West Audi dealerships.

Eastbourne Audi lent me the new R8 when it had just come out

'Zero' miles - I was first customer to drive it

Insured by them

Have it for a day or two - unfortunately only had it for a day because my diary was too bonkers to take it back the next day.

I didn't even have any intention of buying one, which to be fair they would have known

The only thing I was asked not to do was put it in Race mode (or whatever the chequered flag is because "we know what you are like !"
Currently :

That may well be the case & perhaps Eastbourne are part of a much larger chain than Blackburn Audi so their Insurance cover will differ. I don't know the answer & i'm not overly happy at having to pay to test drive a car for 2 days, however i'd like to think they've no choice as knowing the Dealership very well it would be somewhat foolish of them to not offer insurance if they in fact could.

I'd best make sure i get my £90's worth.

Step 1 successfully completed. The C4S is a very impressive piece of kit. To think it's 150 horses down on the RS6 it is as quick at sub 3 figure speeds and went around corners like it was on rails. The PDK gearbox is immense, it's better than the S-Tronic box in the RS4 and the R8 IMO. It's a great place to be, the wife enjoyed driving and being passenger - something she's not so great with in the RS6. 6 year old was comfortable in the back, even the wife was OK in the back for a short run. The cab has slightly more compromised space and the seat backs are almost beyond the vertical, which made this all the more impressive. I did a supermarket run, no problem fitting the bags in the front boot. Golf clubs for me and the boy were consumed without bother. The new PCM (sat nav) with Carplay is fantastic. Certainly way better than the 3rd gen Audi MMI, I've not spent much time with the latest Audi offering with Carplay. Using gesture control on the screen to change the map scale was pretty cool.

Getting back in to my RS6 was not a complete disappointment, but it's a very different driving experience and doesn't come anywhere close dynamically. It also shows how poor the steering is by comparison (the 911 didn't have the dynamic steering option). The car did also try to kill me on the way back.

Next stop Silverstone and PEC to try the gen 2 TTS. The OPC have been fantastic throughout, none of this has been a bother or a debate.
