V10 R- versus S-tronic

Gents,

Sorry if there are already multiple threads on this. Did a (quick) look and didnt find any apparentones.

I am interested in first hand experiences and comments on the difference between R-tronic and S-tronic V10 R8s.

Basically my question is: Is S-tronic worth the money, or am I very fine off with the R-tronic?

(An assumption from my side is that the S tronic, being double clutch, would last much longer... correct?)

cheers

Theres something in between IMO :).... Map the TCU and the R-Tronic is super quick, a lot smoother and no jerking at low speeds. I personally like the R-Tronic's feel to remind myself that I'm in something special.

Drove a Ferrari 458 Speciale and even with their great dual clutch GB, it changes gears violently ( not totally smooth) when you are on the limit and it felt Epic.

Yeah the issue with RT is the speed more, and auto mode

Don't get me wrong... RT has it's charm when driven properly but it's ancient tech and like DK says is painfully slow and dim witted in traffic / auto mode.

Is Is the R8's R-Tronic basically the same as BMW's SMG transmission, being a Sequential Manual rather than an Auto.

That was a bad analogy! I think you meant that digital is better than analogue but in many cases it isn't. Who would take a digital watch or an analogue one? And many would still argue that analogue music sounds better than digital. And game controllers now have analogue controls rather than digital.

But I get your point with the rest of your good examples!

Brain freeze, i forgot you've had both boxes :drink:

How do they differ on the road? I recall the SMGIII in my E60 M5 was great fun in Manual mode, but horrific in Auto & thus was never used again in that mode. In savage setting the thump in the back when changing with the paddles i found exhilarating when used, but like most owners, mine failed & was replaced under warranty & i sold the car soon after that.

The R8 is better on the road

I found the M6 to be dumb as hell in auto, really slow to change and made the car feel like a 2.0

The R8 is better.

The problem is the speed of the changes in Auto

When in sport and using paddles it's not to bad as per SMG
