R8 V10 tyres

Post by Bonzo » Sat Jun 29, 2013 9:35 am

Well this was a new one on me. Had the car in at the dealers for a service and asked them for a quote on new tyres. They came back with an unsurprisingly large number which was a bit more than I'd been quoted at Costco, but not a huge amount more.

The surprise came when I was told that because my car was factory fitted with Pirelli's, the dealership would only fit Pirelli's back on it, this despite the fact that the Pirelli's in question have changed since mine were first installed. The tyre youth advised that these were matched to the R8 and could be distinguished by the 'RO1' letters at the end. I pointed out that my Costco quote for Michelin's were also for tyres that were type-matched to the R8, and also had an 'RO1' designation. Costco actually had other tyres the same size to show there were different ones, presumably not for an R8. The tyre youth was unimpressed and reiterated that Pirelli's were on it and they would only fit Pirelli's back to it.

Personally, Ii went through good times with Michelin Pilot Super Sports (in various guises) on my RS4 and will probably go with them for a try. I'm disappointed in the Pirellis, having only got 9500miles out of them - and no track days included in that.

Anyone else had this dealer response?

Anyone else tried the RO1 Michelins?

Just as a follow up on this. I was out for a boys drive around Aberdeenshire (2 Ferrari's, 2 GT3's and me - great fun BTW) and they all recommended a local tyre man. In the end I put on the special Audi recommended RO1 Pirelli's for £210 cheaper than anyone else in town - top job fella!

Interestingly, despite having wear left on the fronts, once we had a proper look at them with the wheels off, the fronts were badly scrubbed. It looked like I'd been driving a front wheel drive car. My new best friend, the tyre mannie, said that he'd seen this on every R8 he'd done. Anyone else seen the same?

Thanks Brooner, I shall look them up. I used Rab Sillett who does all the bikers tyres in Aberdeen. I was a little worried putting the car up the slope of his compact garage, but there were no scrapes. All alloys removed and replaced safely - which is how my friends had said it would be. No probs since and the new rubber is really quite nice.
