I was surprised just how far behind the R8 was, the S8 looks nice, its certainly got some nice gadgets.

I was surprised how far behind the R8 was but i knew the S8 was going to win because they would not of shown it if the R8 was faster. Fith gear have always given proper informative reviews on cars unlike the other so called motoring programme :piss: REVERSE GEAR on the BBC which is more about the presenters than the cars.

Life's not always about a drag race, the V8 R8 would murder it on track.

I don't think "murder" is appropriate...
They have similar power to weight (approx 255-260 bhp/ton) but the S8 is a lot more powerful. On a track like Silverstone arena with very very long straights it would be quite close...

On something a little tighter say brands indy then yes, yuo'd have to go with the r8 as the s8 couldn't use the power advantage. But I bet it'd be closer than you think. The s6 isn't far behind the r8 on track times and is 100bhp and 100lbft down on the s8 but with the same weight.

Ok, manslaughter? ;-)

Not all about power to weight either, factor lateral grip and breaking distance the 7yo design holds up well?

Trust me - I know it's not about power to weight :)
As for breaking distance - well I'd expect both of them to last quite long enough to get round the track ;)

Braking distance is always a curveball... car and driver rate both the A8L and the R8 5.2 as having the same braking distance.
The issue with the R8 is that it's weight is quite far back and under braking you generally find that adding weight at the front is more beneficial overall and thats easy to manage in a front engined car.

Lateral grip - R8 easily (unless the S8 has some magic quattro improvements). Lower mass and lower centre gravity and I suspect wider track. These all reduce the load transfer effect (in fact they are the only things that dictate load transfer).

The R8 is 44-56% weight distribution, but I do see where you are coming from Ads, that A8L observation surprises me somewhat, the R8 is in the "under 100 club" of what was in 2011 only 22 cars that stop from 60mph in less that 100 feet.

Braking is something that raises eyebrows... For example a 1.6 diesel focus can put brake an ariel atom.

I rented a Clio 200 cup at Spa last year, the breaking performance on that was outstanding for a std car.
