Was just about to get some PIAA bulbs to replace my DRLs and noticed that they're not road legal. I know people have discussed that MOT might be an issue if the examiner decides they are too blue - but what implications might this have on insurance.

Let's say I need to make a claim on my insurance and the assessor they send out notices I have "funny coloured bulbs" - how would this affect my claim? would it invalidate my insurance?

They are not really blue at all, more of a white light like the DRL's on S8's etc.

I have them on mine for years and never had an issue with MoT's. I can't imagine that any assessor would realise that they were anything different.

Yeah, I'm talking about *insurance* not MOT.

PIAA bulbs are white not blue, I think everyone is getting a bit overly paranoid about insurance these days. Rightly so in some cases but for these I don't think anyone could really tell. They are not even that bright despite what they state.

As others have done I also run these and have no fears over insurance. Sorry I know it doesn't answer your question, we need an insurance guru to reply to this for a straight answer.

The answer is pretty obvious.
Changing the spec of anything from oem will need to be declared on the insurance.
However... I would be surprised if drl's were an issue. They simply are not bright enough to cause any incidents. Sure if you changed them for 200w xenons then you might be in for some trouble.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but from the photos I've seen, the PIAA drl bulbs appear to be tinted blue (to achieve the "whiter" light). In other words, by simply looking at the bulbs in the headlamp housing (unlit) they look obviously non-standard.

Yep, we *should* declare any modifications on insurance - but have those who have actually done this mod declared them?

What's the risk if you don't declare something and then claim? - do the insurance companies completely refuse to pay out at all or do they reduce their payout?

Ahhh yes they do kind of look bluish when off. Hard pressed to really notice when looking at the headlamp though.

Not sure what you would tell the insurance company though? That your DRLs are brighter but they are only on during the day??? It would be interesting to hear what they would say especially as they pass an MOT.

I hate how anal insurance is these days. It's still ok over here though. I had a quote for the RS then I declared all my mods and my insurance went up a total of $0 dollars. If its non turbo and not lowered they don't seem to give a rats what you have done here.
