Timing chain

Hey folks, am I right in thinking the B7 RS4 has a timing chain as opposed to a belt..
If so when does the chain/tensioners/guides etc need replacing or checking?
Do Audi include it in routine/minor/major services??
I should probably know this...
Thanks

I think officially it's a long time 100k miles or more.

Def a chain and as far as i know it does not need changing.

They rattle like <beep> when the mileage is high I'm sure, I'm changing all mines

Maybe the tensioner needs replacing, but def not the chain itself.

This shows an S4 engine, but the chains are almost (exactly?) identical on the RS4 engine.

4 chains or something? I've heard of them being replaced if the rattling gets too bad. Something like 2k in parts alone

Does the RS4 rattle on start up like the B6 S4 does ?

How do you come to that conclusion?

My B6 S4 rattled more at startup when it was 18 months old than my B7 RS4 does at nearly 6 years old (but the RS4 does make more of a whine) - so I tend to agree with TimDogg.

I ask as you never hear from RS owners talking about it yet its pretty much plagued all B6 S4 owners .... me included.
I thought they shared the same engine architecture so why does it not happen to the RS4 ?

So yours does rattle but less than the S4 after 18mths. So how can you agree with TimDogg's catagorical "No" that there is no chain rattle?. Make your mind up.

Mine doesn't rattle at all.
I think more fair to say They share engine characteristics rather than fundamental archutecture.
However with regards to timing chains I suspect the requirement of 8.5 k rom require considerably closer tolerances and beefed up components such as tensioned.
Might be wrong but my guess

From my expiernce and understanding (haveing onwed B6 S4 and B7 RS4), the main reason for the B6 S4 rattling at start up was due to the chain tensioners and the time it took them to presurise with oil.
The RS4 must have better tensioners fitted that either dont lose oil when the engine isnt running or are quickler to presurise up.
All i know is my RS4 with 50k on it doesnt rattle at all.
