Moved on

Post by almoRS » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:46 pm

So here it is, after about a months owernship I thought I'd share my experiences so far with the C63 vs the RS4. Pics below show car when I went to get it at the factory in Stuttgart with temporary plates on. The factory collection experience is something else and would recommend it to anyone if you ever switch to a merc as service and tour are brilliant. Drive back to the UK lets you properly experience the car.

Overall I absolutely love this car. Had the RS4 for 6 years and it seems quite dated (not surprising given age) compared to the AMG. Options I went for over standard were:

AMG Performance pack (power up from 457bhp - 487bhp, bigger (red) brake calipers)
AMG Limited Slif Differential
AMG Performance Suspension
Carbon fibre outside and inside
Harmon Kardon sound system

The power this car puts down is unbelievable in Sport+ and the exhaust note is incredible. I don't think there is any need to fit a custom exhaust as it is really loud at all times. Not far off the Tubi for the RS and more subtle. Ride is stiffer than the RS4 which had SS+ but it is comfortable all the time, even on UK roads. Steering control and feedback is so much more and obviously with rear wheel drive you can feel it bite down in the corners when pushing it. All the tech for satnav, ipod, hard disk register, DAB etc. is standard and a lot better than RS4 given the age gap. Auto gearbox is a first for me and took some getting used to but would be reluctant to ever go back to a manual stick as you just need to drive it. Can be driven in manual mode with paddles and makes plenty of noise downshifting and up-shifting to bark out the back.

Downsides, non-really apart from the foot handbrake, which is known and can be lived with. Have driven it in the really wet up and down the UK and yes you can put the traction control on at any speed if you slam your foot down in Sport+. As long as you know what to expect from the rear and respect it then it can be dealt with. Will put winter tyres on later in the year to see how it handles up here in the cold north of Scotland.

Still got the RS4 at the moment and although it was a great car I'm glad I've moved on as the AMG is so much more fun.

Probable mods will be a set of HRE P43SC wheels and a carbon-fibre diffuser to finish it off. :jump:

My gosh that's a lot of bhp! Congrats on ur purchase. Need a few pics of interior, particularly seats. My only concern of any rear wheel drive car is rear end comin out when pushing cos I used to hav a merc cossie which was rear drive and I lost it and crashed round a bend in slightly damp conditions. Hence I love the 4wd security. So can u please expand on how safe it is relative to me who doesn't know how to control a rear end comin out. I would drive fairly careful in rain anyway but don't want to hav to drive really slow. And in the dry, I would expect to be able to go round a bend with foot down and most definelty hav no drama in a straight line. I know from watching the c63 amg saloon reviews, its a handful if put foot down, wet or dry. So is this new coupe much safer?

I did an hour in one at MB World last week with this guy - http://www.paul-rees.co.uk/ as my instructor. The ride involved a couple drives on their skid pans and it was tough going (but great fun!) to keep the car moving in a straight line. I was very impressed with the brakes especially c/w my RS6. At one point they get you to drive on to this wet straight at around 40-ish, take your hands off the wheel and then stamp on the brakes - car pulled up perfectly straight!

I didn't find the ride harsh but I couldn't tell you what mode we were in. Have you tried the launch control yet Almo? That was great fun...

On the race track Paul was told me exactly where to brake and when to accelerate - i recall at one point, there's a slight right hand corner leading into a long straight at the back of the circuit and I put the foot down a fraction too early and I could feel the tail drifting out - and this in the dry!

Best hour I've spent for a long long time. :D :D :D

kay: New coupe is more rigid that the saloon apparently. I haven't had the backend out yet, couple of twitches in the wet but nothing to worry about so far. LSD probably helps to keep both wheels lined up.

Malcomsu: Nice write up on brooklands! I hope to make a trip down there and try out one of their cars in the wet for some training. I haven't tried race start (launch control) yet as it will wreck the clutch if done to many times, lol.

Great to see others enjoying the C63, I've had one for a while now and there are many contrasts with the RS4. Both great cars but different and require different driving styles to get the best from each. The torque in the C63 is the most immediate difference, compared to even to a modified RS...love them both.....

Thought it was a proper auto? If it is then you have a fluid flywheel instead of a clutch and not heard of them having issues with launch.

Very nice, fantastic car, one of my favs.

I to did that driving day at Brooklands a few years ago, enjoyed driving the C63 around their track.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

Just looked that box up. Its nothing like an auto box lol. Fluid flywheel (torque converter) is done away with and its seems to have wet clutches instead and even clutches replacing engagement bands (not sure if that's the correct term but was 30 years ago my Dad 'tried' to explain auto boxes to me) lol.

The quick look I had, if these do ware like normal clutches then you are right to take it easy coz it wont be cheep to sort!

That being said I'm outta my league with this box :)

Almo - I have a 507 coupe on order, used to have a B7.

I have also specced the LSD but wasn't sure about the suspension but you say it's stiffer than SS+, which is what I had on my RS so I'll probably let the suspension stay as is if that is the case because when I got my M3 I felt it was much better damped than my RS, so wouldn't want stiffer than the RS was.

I did test drive a PP coupe at brookslands and it felt much stiffer than my m3 but I don't know if it had the performance suspension or not - that car was fine.

Did you compare a coupe with and without the performance suspension or just order it regardless?

It's probably been in the body Shop getting fixed up after spinning in the rain :)

Spinning in the rain, just spinning in the rain...
