RS4 to Porsche 911?

My wife has just told me I need to grow up and wants me to get rid of my beloved RS4. I'm reluctant, I love the car and have never felt quite as content with ownership like this before.

The only thing I would consider would be a 911 C4 or C4S (997).

Has anybody made the move the other way, Porsche to RS4?

Still early days but I might go to Porsche in Leeds for a cheeky look at the weekend.

I originally joined this forum way back in 2008, why, because I had a C4s which I wanted to swap for an RS4

I hated 911 ownership, it's one of those things you always want to do, but when you have it you feel a little deflated. I personally would not swap back, but each to their own!

A Fezza 360 on the other hand...................... :<beep>_you:

Grow up by getting a 911?

Doesn't seem to make sense to me... I'd have thought 911 was even less of a grown-up persons car than an RS4, at least with the RS4 you can choose if it's to be a family car, a sports car (or a load carrier if you have an AVant) but with the 911 it's a sports car all the time.

I have a friend who has a 57 plate C4S, not my style car though with the wrong wheels and a big spoiler, still it'd give me an idea what they're like to drive and he's said I can have it for a weekend.

Perhaps the only thing I need to change on the RS would be to swap my non-res Milltek pipes for resonated ones, then it wouldn't sound as loud and everyone's a winner!!

I've spent a lot on this car and I really would struggle to "upgrade" to anything else.

This may be worth a mention...I'll let you decide....my Milly is resonated but at the MRC dyno day it recorded a higher DB reading than DK's non res non valved system! This has convinced me that there must be barely anything between the res and non res systems in terms of volume, sound difference yes but volume no.

Back to topic, it sounds like the 911 is a itch you want to scratch, take a few for a spin and you will soon know :beerchug:

Grown up? Surely a Merc is for the OAP's of the world... perhaps not a 63 though ... Porsche is for a mid life crisis isnt it?? :) AM for Ive achieved, happy but old. Fezza's for peeps who have far to much time and cash on there hands and small c*cks, Lambos for loonies and footballers, Beamers for... well lets not go there...... RS4 is a grown up kinda car IMO. Its neither in your face or overly quiet. As the man says you can stick the family in it or take it to the track. Kids cars are sooped up Scoobies and fast Fords etc.

Possibly there are signs here that the wife wears the trousers in the household as well? eh Maybe a PX needed there as well then if thats the case. :) Then get a Turbo and all the above.

Yeh, 911 or RS4......
well, having had 6 911's as well as other nice cars over the past 14 years, the 911 was always my driving car. I've loved every minute, having had all the models from 964 up, mainly all 4wd until my last one, the 997 911C2S cabrio, swore i'd never have another rear wheel drive 911, but after test driving it, realised that Porsche had really got their act together weight and stability wise. Best 911 if you could, personally i'd say 996 Turbo, most fun i've had ever, the 997 if i could say, as i was loaned one for a week trying to get me to buy it...thought it was too fast, sounds mad, but at slower speeds it just seemed wrong.

My business slowed down and that more so with the fact the two kids were growing, 911 was always becoming a bind on long journeys, but then i didn;t care as i was in the front. Bit the bullett, sold the 911 and the 7 series, waited a while and brought the RS4 Avant, now had it for a month and won't be modding as we wish to have the 3 year warranty we got from Audi kept correct.

Have to say, this is the first time my wife's taken an interest in a car, she loves it, we all fit perfectly, the car as you know drives awesome, it's discreet, it ticks all the boxes, does;t get backs up when pulling into clients car parks and i have to mention, would easily stay with a 911 any day, except turbo.

I'm not gonna let go of the RS4, we love it. if work picks up, i'd buy a 911 for the garage any day of the week, it's an every day sports car, but yes, just a little flashier than an RS4. C hap round b y us just sold his newish M3 as 3 child came along, always longed for a 911, loved the drive i allowed him in the RS, last week saw him purchase and M5, loves all but the almost daily visit to the petrol station, my thoughts, Bug Ugly.

Nice situation to be in, enjoy whatever, all the best. M

Hmm... number 4 for me due any second and RS4 still gonna be the main means of family transport :)

Having been fortunate enough to own two RS's at the same time (a B5 RS4 & a '73 Carrera RS) I would suggest keep the RS4 as a daily drive and get a cheap(ish) 911 of your choice for your wife to blast about in.

Excellent! Someone from Car Magazine stuck one of those in the back of an M3 and raved about it. Genius. Did you get one??

Both awesome cars.
I had a B7 RS4 for 13 months, I now have a 996 C4S having a had a C2 Cabrio (both 2003).
There is something special about a 911, there must be because I can forgive the rubbish 996 dash!
Drove an RS4 again this week after many months and interesting to compare.
You can just get in an RS4 and spank it even in the wet, the 911, even a 4 wheel drive one has to be treated with respect and takes a while to learn.
I've had this one for 2.5 months and still feel I have only scratched the surface of it's dynamic ability.
The RS4 is almost too good.
911 is grown up because you have to have a midlife crisis before you can buy one :)

This is subjective but the 996 C4S whoops the RS4 when it comes to looks, it's just so shapely and low and then there's that red reflector.
But Porsches can create the wrong image especially in the current economic climate so I use mine sparingly and like to head out of the city and drive in areas where people have better cars than me (i.e. the Cotswolds) to avoid the paint stripper.
