A terrible morning!

Post by paime » Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:17 pm

I was cruising into work this morning when I came upon some traffic. "No problems" I thought (I travel to work on a 60mph single carriageway) and dropped into 4th to expedite my manoeuvre. On passing the second car I spotted a cop camera van on the left hand side of the road!! Nooooo!! My only hope is that I was obscured from view by the traffic I was overtaking. I'm properly sh*tting myself, I already have 5 points on my licence and I must've reached 90mph + at the fastest. That's the only problem I can find with the RS4, it's just too damn accomplished! Nobody but to blame but myself though!

Fingers crossed paime for the next two weeks!

Can totally feel for you - there's so many times when after being the model driver I act like a bit of an arse (because the car goads me) that I crap myself that I'm going to get a ticket. Hope for your sakes that it's just a mental tap on the shoulder and not a letter through the door.

If it's your standard speed camera van, from what I remember reading they have to have you 'in their sights' for a minimum distance: not very far though. It's operated by a wee man in the back so there is operator error too: he would not be aiming for you initially. And if it was a long row of traffic there would be too much interruption of the line of sight. They have to do it live. I'm assuming of course that all of your approach to the van was on the wrong side of the road, with a near-continuous line of cars between you and him. Does that sound about right?

Good luck!

It was one of those vans like a transit with the camera out the back and an operator. I overtook two cars, one being a car/van thing and I couldn't see the cops because of the cars so I'm hoping it works the other way too. I'm not complaining about their presence, in fact I'm glad they police the roads, I seem to have an inability to stay away from planting my right foot. With that much power and that much noise coming from the car, the RS4 provides the best driving experience I know. Maybe I need to raise my maturity levels...

I've just been done doing 49 in a 30 and was worried what i would get, but found out you have to be twice the legal limit, except on a motorway, to get more than the statutory £60 fine and 3 points.

If you do get a letter i would def ask to see a photo of your car, they "may" just try it on !!

Did you know these officers volunteer to do this and get overtime, it is never done during their normal working hours, there is a website for us here in Newcastle on Tyne and Northumberland where all the static and mobile camera sites are listed;

www.safespeedforlife.co.uk

But they're very sneaky at finding places to hide so you don't see them 'till it's too late

Don't know if other counties have the same

We're such an easy target for the police, it's only going to get worse

I was told a while back that the local force has to say which cameras are on and off every day. I'm pretty sure that was the site I was shown at the time, but looking at it now I can't tell which are active and inactive. The sergeant (who wasn't traffic) might have been mistaken: I'm using my iPhone all I can see are te locations of fixed and mobile cameras in the area. Still nice to know though - one favourite spot is just where I turn onto the main road, and it's easy to over accelerate at busy times to safely get across the near constant stream of traffic.

We've got something similar up here in Aberdeen (www.nescamp.co.uk) but it's not something i would check every day, i usually just rely on observation to spot them.

Victor2vt - not sure you're right on the points system, i was caught doing 86 in a 60 a couple of years ago and was given 5 points and a £250 fine. I wish there more consistency when it came to motoring offences as some seem far too lenient and i've heard of others which take the p*ss. I guess it depends which side of the bed the judge got out of that morning.

I know for certain that in Scotland there has to be 2 officers on duty in a traffic car, in England only 1

If that's true then the rules have been changed.

In 2003 Thames Valley Police caught me doing 77 in a 50 and gave me the option of a "chat" with the Magistrates and a probable 6 points and a heafty fine, or 3 points and £60 fine if I paid an additional £80 and went on a half day course.

I agree - thats not my understanding of the rules.
90 in a 60.. I'd expect 6 points and around a 300 quid fine.
However, it could be argued there are additional circumstances in that you were overtaking at the same time so could be construed as 90 in a 60 on the wrong side of the road... This is knocking on the door of driving without due care as well.

The one saving grace is that being on the other side of the road you may have been covered so an accurate reading may not be possible.

Gonna be a long 2 weeks.
