is there a guide for removing the aluminium trim

Post by Luke@plush » Tue Jan 24, 2012 1:58 pm

As the title says really. My aluminium trim on the car was tarnished when i bought the vehicle and was thinking about replacing it to bring the car back up to a standard i'm happy with (it's bugged me ever since i bought it)

I know you have to remove the rear quarter glass to get the back peice of the trim off but wondered if there was a guide anywhere before i get stuck in to remvoing all the rest around the doors and roof line and rear bumper?

Any help would be great :beerchug:

I don't have the details but I've heard it described as "a complete and total bastard of a job" on more than one occasion.
I also seem to recall that more than one specialist won't offer it as it's just a pain.

You may be better of getting some gritty polish to take off any surface stuff and respraying them in-situ.

Failing that, a vinyl wrap could work well too.

I'd like to know about this also. The RS I have just bought is showroom condition bar some tarnishing on the satin alu trim on the drivers door just under the wing mirror.

Would it be a warranty claim possibility? It still has warranty? If not, any idea on cost?

Warranty claim, I would say no chance. It is a trim part, which I believe are not even covered for the complete 3 year warranty from new.

Warranty has long gone on this I am afraid & Audi class as "trim" so not covered under the paint warranty. It seems to be caused by valets leaving traffic film remover on too long so would be a doubtful claim anyway although I do remember someone getting a screen surround on a cab off Audi - they accused him of using non-std windscreen cleaner but he was an industrial chemist so proved them wrong in the end.

Mine has a few annoying spots on it - best bet is to keep it well waxed to try to protect as much as possible & avoid dodgy car-washes to not get any more marks

Thanks.

What would be the cost involved in replacing just the drivers door trim?

Luke have you tried a fine compound polish and a small detailing mop? this is what I done with mine, then re-sealed with Dodo purple haze wax.

Remember to mask up the paint and glass works treat.
