Occasional Knock
Occasional Knock
Occasional knock when going over a large sleeping policeman or large undulation in the road.
Sounds like its from the suspension and only happened about 3 times in last 1000 miles.
Any ideas? Could it be DRC related? I've had Audi check the DRC but they say its ok...

Re: Occasional Knock
Could be, what was the pressure of the DRC when they checked it? Should be min 12 Bar, ideally 16 Bar. But could easily as be something not secured rattling around in your car. Does is originate from the front or rear?
Re: Occasional Knock
I didn't know that they pressure tested it. Its at Audi now having a service so I'll call them to ask them to pressure test it.
It comes from the left hard front I think - hard to tell.
Many thanks for that. I'll post results later

Re: Occasional Knock
Just told me that a DRC pressure check would be 2/3 hours work and chargeable.
Is there anywhere that I can get it tested for less than 300 - 400 quid?!

Re: Occasional Knock
Mine has done this ever since I had part of the DRC replaced (can't now remember what - I think it was 2 shocks and a valve) under warranty 18 months ago. Asked Audi to check at the first service and it came back no fault found - with a bill for £100 for an hour's labour. I've not bothered since but will get it rechecked just before its 5th birthday so if the DRC is leaking I can get a goodwill repair.

Re: Occasional Knock
I had the same problem with my DRC!!! Had it replaced 3 times, in the end I bit the bullet and paid out for kw 3 sports suspension, no more knocking + car turns in much sharper round bends, well worth the money

Re: Occasional Knock
One thing i like about the standard suspension set-up is its compliance, is that not compromised when opting for for an after-market alternative? Re: Occasional Knock
I heard the same today going over a speed bump (front left too).
Only ever heard it once before and thats me coming up to 2 years ownership.
Its due for a service February time and still under warranty so will book it in earlier and ask them to inspect and confirm condition as it will be 5 years old in March.
NSF & OSF replaced under warranty following used vehicle prep, Feb 2010 and done 13k miles since.
Does the 5 year guideline run with the cars registration date only or from each struts replacement date?
Also, whats involved in a 40k service?

Re: Occasional Knock
Depends - if you had them changed FOC then reg date.
If you contributed then 1 year from fitting iirc

Re: Occasional Knock
You lucky person! May I ask where you got yours done for free??Them is the breaks of franchised dealers unfortunately, I have had mine pressure tested twice FOC.
Just had mine back from the dealers here in Cardiff about an hour ago and they visually inspected the DRC for me while servicing it and told me all looks fine with no leaking. In all fairness the knock is very infrequent and the suspension seems fine i.e. no other noises and no diving during braking etc. They told me that if they suspected a fault they would have pressure tested it.
Basically they gave it a clean bill of health so I'm happy with that. Seems the odd knock is a common thing so I guess not to worry and get on and enjoy the thing!
Bon weekend!

The ride quality with the KW3 suspension is surprisingly good, the comfort is not much different to the DRC with more adjustment, I.e., height and rebound damping. I've also got 275/30 19 Goodyear eagle F1 asymmetrics, the two complement each other very well with great handling.
Re: Occasional Knock
What sort of cost are you looking at for full kw3 suspension fitted and where would someone go to get it in the UK?

Re: Occasional Knock
The fitted cost of kw suspension kit variant 3 should be around £1.800 and make sure the wheel alignment is done properly, I got my wheels set up a merit tyres. Regarding were to get this done is a matter of choice, AMD,MRC, I know the master tech at audi who started his own company www.mmstechnik.co.uk he is based in sunbury on Thames, very honest bloke
Re: Occasional Knock
Great info thanks. If I ever have problems with the DRC I will consider this.
