Paint warranty void??

Post by blue95 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 10:54 am

Hi folks,

Just after a second opinion....quick background car was purchased via Audi dealer in March of this year so still under warranty.

The problem: The paint on my alloys has flaked in a couple of places (alloys were refurbed by the Audi dealership at time of purchase) also noticed paint runs on every single wheel. In addition the paint on the front bumper has gone milky in one corner along with some evidence of a smart repair gone bad.

I took the car to my local dealership and they said they cannot do the bumper under warranty as it needs to be verified it was done by Audi in the first place.

Called the place I purchased it from and told them of the above problems and asked what work was done to it when they got the car. After being fobbed off for several days, have been told they have no record off any work being dome except the MPC (multi point check). After a few more days of messing arround, I spoke to the guy who took the car in as part-ex. He told me that Audi only checks for major accident damage as part of the MPC, and they are not too concerned with minor previous repairs, also advised me that there is no alloy wheel warranty on refurbd alloys unless I bought brand new alloys off them.

I asked what if more than the bumper had been painted? he advised then my paintwork warranty was void. As you can imagine I was pretty annoyed and asked what the point of the MPC was and the point of the Audi approved used car scheme....he advised me to buy a new car instead if I wanted the Audi warranty and I should expect things like this with a second hand car. :bash:

TBH I was half expecting this after the fiasco after they sold me a car with duff headlights, but I thought I had better jump through this hoop before going to Audi.

Having read the warranty docs this makes more sense know, fair enough regarding work not done by Audi and the time limits set. I just assumed any work they did do would be covered for 12 months i.e. the wheels.

I guess we were a bit naive as well buying a used approved car, assuming it would be like buying a new car, but this was certainly how the car purchase was presented at the time.....well up to the point of them taking a big wad of cash. We thought it was the ideal alternative to buying from an independant dealer or private. Lesson learnt I think....next time just stick to buying new again.

I agonised for quite a while over whether or not to buy used approved. In the end I did despite the premium it cost over non UA because I thought it was worth it for guaranteed peace of mind. Since then I've realised that was somewhat naive and UA isn't anything like it's cracked up to be. Having said that I think all manufacturors schemes are probably equally crummy and a lot of it comes down to the dealership and how they apply it anyway.

I feel your pain in some ways.

As for the Alloys im not at all surprised by this as most (if not all dealers) just referb alloys using mobile sprayers - thes make the wheels look good but are only cosmetic and last around 6 months to a year - only way to probably referb wheels is to have them done properly - stripped back to alloy, powder coated and then laquered.

Two places i know of in the south east are - Lepsons in Gillingham and Spit and Polish in Tonbridge - both will need the wheels for 3 days (preference is Lepsons)

Im having the same issue with my RS4 after purchasing finding the rear bumper a slightly different shade of blue (kicking myself for not noticing before i bought, but there is a good reason why i didnt), previous owner who had the car since 2008 and 11,000 miles didnt have it sprayed, now trying to find out through the orginal selling Audi garage if they did any work on it, but they have no reference of the reg on the car.

Good luck with getting things resolved though

Peace of mind was the exact same reason for my purchase too.....tbh my only real concern is that the 12 year bodywork warranty may be void, if an area that does not have factory paint or was not painted by audi has a defect i.e. rust coming through underneath.

I understand why from Audis point of view, would be nice to be told before hand though, especially when buying an approved used car.

Cheers,

Wheels and bumpers are no big deal as rims gets kerbed and bumpers get chipped all the time, just the warranty issue that is bugging me.

For wheel refurbs I usually use pristine in woburn, they certainly live up to the name too!

Hi, bumpers are often a slightly different shade to the main bodywork on many makes of car. This is often due to the different background and primer used on the plastic and doesn't neccessarily mean the bumper has been painted. On my current RS4 cab in Avus silver this is the case and i notice it but its not too bad and probably many people wouldn't notice unless it was pointed out. I had a bad experience on my previous car (Focus RS) and I had the whole car resrayed under warranty the match was that bad

The standard paint warranty is 3 years from original purchase and the onus should be on the dealer to prove that the paint work is not the original factory paint, they can check the paint thickness but the car may have had paint as a result of delivery damage so getting a brand new car is still no guarantee. I had a paint defect on an approved used car within the 3 years and it was all covered by the dealer without issue, they still did a <beep> job (bad prep + brilliant spray job = <beep> job)

The paint warranty and the corrosion warranty are very different things, claims under the corrosion warranty are pretty difficult to prove and successful claims appear to be quite rare.

Had the wife's S3 roof done all under warranty, one month before ten years was up.
