took the bananananananana to the MRC Rolling Road day today as organised by the other side

First off, hats of to Doug and his team - great event and all the staff and Doug were more than happy to help with the cars where possible.

Mine went on the Dyno ... first run .... 339PS !

not good .... vacuum leak

Now, when I first picked up the car from its previous owner, it felt quick ... I mean proper quick ! much faster than the RS 4 Cab.

THEN, within a few days I took it to Paramount Performance in Slough, to fit my Non Res Non Valved Milltek.

Ever since that fitting, it never felt the same.

I even said to iR8V8 (RS6_Dave) at a meet a few months back that I suspected it had a vaccum leak as it had lost its 'kick'

but, then for the National RS 4 Meeting, in drags against TimsterRS4 and scaghead, the bananananana held its own....nothing in it, neck and neck !!!!

so, must just be me...

but, then the dyno reading does not lie !!

So, the MRC boys head to the most obvious leak, in the air box i think ... 2 second fix, next run .... 370PS

ok, now we're getting somewhere ...

next run 350PS ! hhmmmmmm .... another leak? Doug can hear a hissing from the rear

Exhaust valves

Turns out, upon fitting my Non Valved Milltek, the cowboys at Paramount Performance decided against bunging up the valves ... thus allowing loss of vacuum


So, bung up the valves .....

386.7PS

BOSH !

So, two lessons learnt

1. trust your instinct ... if it doesnt feel right, it prob isnt

2. dont ever use Paramount Performance as they evidently dont have a fecking clue



Finally, huge thanks to Doug and MRC for showing their expertise and having the good grace to sort the leaks on the spot

I will be a returning customer .... which is more than I can say for you know who in Slough

The lads at MRC was very busy fixing vacuum leaks all day. Just like to say a thank you to Jamie for aligning my bumper that a 2010 M5 took a dislike too. (hand break failed and rolled into my front bumper). Bumper need popping back in so to speak.

Why are they taking noise measurements?
If it's for council stuff then fair enough but anything will overhead as the sound will be amplified by the garage and concrete

Peaked out the mic 2metres away at 130db olie reckons mid to high 130's mines makes, shoots flames also looks epic

To be fair though, measuring noise there outside the garage will always give a very excessive level.
All the sound waves have only one way to go and thats out the door - coupled with the concrete everywhere which is an excellent sound reflector then you'd be surprised just how much extra noise this would generate.

I have fixed the airbox flap and bunged up the exhaust valves on mine, out of interest is there another suspect area for a vacum leak then?

yup - the main culprit is unfrotunately under the manifold. there's a hose that can crimp along with a cheap rubber one way valve that eventually fails.
MRC replace the valve as a matter of corse when the manifold is off for anything. I advised one member when they did their own carbon clean to extend the vac hose so the valve can be mounted outside of the manifold.

However you can check the vacuum system very easily - there's a 5 way junction right at the front of the engine near the manifold and between the tumble flap actuators. Using a tech bulletin online you can identify these and pop them off and use a hand vacuum pump to test the integrity of the lines. Even better results if you combine this with vag-com.

Failing that, just get a "T" piece and connect up a manual vacuum/boost gauge and run a line to the pax seat. You can then get a help to watch the vacuum levels whilst you're driving. This is what MRC have done before when testing my car.

Yep, I agree, running the RS4 against others doesn't really tell the story. Same as the 3k-8k rpm test people do. Unless there is a MAJOR problem it's just not going to help.

For the record, I keep an eye on timing and timing correction, this seems to be the best indicator I've found if you suspect an issue.
