I will be including the Nurburgring in my European road trip this summer. I’m sure many of you have been around the ring before so who do you use for insurance? My current insurer (Sky) won’t insure me for the ring.

You will struggle to find a insurer for the TF (touristfahrten) sessions (Public day) if its a privet track day then you will get insured. You can insure anything...at a price.

Try Morrison's.

There are a few others but cant think them right now, try using search function its been covered a few times.

It's gettting (or already got) crazy out there. I wouldnt touch a TF session with a barge pole.
Even with insurance make sure you read the small print and that it covers everything. Most don't cover things such as track stoppage fees and barrier replacements.
Oh - double check your coolant too! (or change to water)

jdp have you driven the Ring before?

When you enter the ring you give up most of your rights, with little or no cover...but it's still worth the experience.

its not "that" bad

we went Easter weekend, and for the two days we spend on the Ring, its was for the most part quiet, i.e. on when you want, and around the track you were on your own with lots of space, as long as you lets the M3's and Porsches through when they came up behind

Its variable of course ... the alot of the 'risks' can be managed, but there is always bad luck which you cannot manage

It's not quite that bad... you just need to remember that it's still classed as a German road and as such is covered by their normal rules of the road.
For example, the first two cars at a scene of an accident MUST stop and give assisstance.
Likewise, if you drop coolant and a motorbiker skids and is injured then you'll most likely be charged.

The other points are that if you crash or cause an accident then you'll be liable for barrier repairs, car recovery and any lost track time. Don't even think about what the cost is should they call in the helicopter paramedics which has happened on occasion.
A colleague crashed a rented 211 there and ended up €15k out of pocket even with insurance (thats why I say double check everything what is and isn't included)

If you've never driven it before then I'd say don't do a public day. You won't enjoy it and you'll be spending more time in your mirrors than going fast.

Agree, its well worth it for the experience. Drive within your limits and dont chase a time.

Its worth remembering to set up your passenger side mirror so you can see fast moving cars approaching.

Im heading out there twice this year, In September with the Revolution group and in October, few of us are doing Spa and Ring. If you enjoy it you should tag along.

Will add, that on a TF day it can get busy, but in the evening it dies down. I did numerous laps in 2009 and did not see another on the track. Its hit or miss, most of you would agree.

Not cheap but in my mind worth it - have taken a policy out with them every year i go.

Example for 3 days on B6 S4 - £10,000 limit with excess £1,000, Accidental Damage cover £9,000 premium £289

just drive at 5/10th's of your ability and you will come out the other end fine

treat everyone on track as a loon, helps a little too....

its a fantastic place to go but give it massive respect and you will be fine

wet days are best as not as many bikers out either

once there you will realise that all the dvd's and top gear shows are nothing like the real thing.

Agree with your comments - been there 4 times now - and going again at begining of July.

Personally though i would never drive it without insurance - im not so concerned with me making a mistake (i dont go that quick), im more concerned with someone else taking me out, or coming round a corner with a couple of cars sitting in your path (happened once to me and not fun, luckly avoided hittin them).

problem is is you have a prang, even it somone else hits you you have no cover, and for the sake of £300 it gives me peace of mind over having to put my hand in my pocket for £9,000

Its not as bad as im making it out, but these thing do happen.

valid point indeed - we came over a brow a few years ago and came accross a minibus full doing around 35mph......think we were doing 100+ at the time - new undies needed that day

please post up the company that does the cover for anyone wants to go for it too.

This will be my first trip to the ring. Plan is to do one lap in the evening on a TF day on my way back from Italy, probably on 7th July.
I’ll be taking it easy when on track, my main concern is the ‘loons’ and keeping out of their way.
Will be taking in the sights of The Stelvio Pass also.

Its actually a friend of mines contact, but they do the cover for anyone. he does insurance for general motor sport in F1 etc.

Im going to be at the ring 1st to 4th july - going to the GP2 as well - curtosy tickets of the guy that does the motor sport insurance

+1 especially on wet days. Track is very empty and virtually no bikers and still plenty of adrenalin filled fun.
