Which would have the hardest ride?

Coilovers, hands down. Stiffer spring rates and you will likely be at a lower ride height. The trade off......you'll likely have a better handling car.

Stiffer doesn't always mean better handling. It's a compromise depending on the road surface - too bumpy and the stiffer springs will just bounce you off the road. given the state of most uk roads you don't want too stiff that's for sure!

I know I bang on about it but if you get decent 3 or 4 way shocks then you get the best of everything. You adjust slow bump/rebound to be really hard and fast bump/rebound to be soft. This'll mean bumps will be absorbed but when you turn the car it'll still corner flat and sharp. No need to compromise.

The only one I know of that is rs4 compatible is the stasis kit using ohlin shocks.
I've used ohlins in the past and they have been stunning. Downside is cost - figure 3.5k fitted but worth finding out from a supplier (aps in brackley iirc).
Still cheaper than a full drc replacement.

Total agreement with adsgreen. Colin Chapman worked out that stiff suspension did not give good handling on public roads.

And the Ride & Handling experts at Lotus still understand that today.

Stiff suspension + bumpy public roads = wheels off the road or at least reduced contact pressure = less grip = worse handling - simples.

DRC is hard to beat for suspension on uk roads

pss9s are good and on the comfortable side of coilovers. lifetime guarantee.

KWs are close to the stiffness of DRC and have a good range of adjustment but you can get lost in the setup and have a poor handling car. 1 year gurantee and the plastic adjusters do break over time

Stasis are awesome on smoother roads and you can specify spring rates - for track use they are great - uk roads - you will be rebuilding them on a regular basis.

I have kw's and love them.................not as smooth as drc though
