Hi Pitched "Whirring" When Setting Off.

My RS4 has developed a high pitched "whirring" noise when I set off slowly. If I dab the brakes the nosie stops, however, thinking it was the brakes binding I have had the calipers in bits, cleaned them up but the noise is still there.
My mechanically minded friend seems to think it could be the release bearing in the clutch...?
And help on the matter appreciated.

Could it be power steering pump, low fluid?

As Revolution says, check fluid levels.
After that its down to process of elimination.
Does the noise still exist at idle & static with the clutch pedal up / down?
Does the noise exist with pedal up / down when coasting at low speed in or out of gear?
Which side does the sound appear to come from?
Get the car up on a jack and rotate that wheel by hand listening and feeling for any sort of obvious resistance (may be hard since its Quattro)
You tried drilling out the holes in the discs and cleaning out all the built up crap?
Could also be a bad earth somewhere and you're hearing it through your radio, switch off completely and try again.
